Simplygon's powerful 3D-optimization features have been integrated into the art pipeline to automatically create LOD (Level of Detail) models in upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online title "The Day". The game - a third-person action MMO for PC that will feature a unique, immersive story set in the near future - is in development by Reloaded Studios and powered by CryENGINE 2.
"It takes vast amount of time and man-months to work on LOD on art assets in MMO games. We're positively sure that Simplygon will help us reduce and automate this process", explained Brad Kim, Senior Programmer for Reloaded Studio's Tech Team.
Like Reloaded Studios, numerous developers of content-heavy 3D games are deciding to invest in the automatic process Simplygon brings to the table. As the optimization toolkit nears its 3.5 release, it has been licensed and implemented in the content pipeline for announced and unannounced game in all its main markets, including North America, South Korea and Japan. Development for a wide spread of game genres and platforms benefit from Simplygon but especially content-heavy titles in open-world environments.
In MMO game development it is pertinent to use less-complex models, usually called LODs, for far-away objects to render more efficiently, e.g. with fewer draw calls, to save memory and processing power. LODs can increase performance radically without lowering visually quality, but when these must be created manually, artists are faced with hours of tedious work for each model in the game. MMO games often contain tens of thousands of models, making this process a serious bottleneck unless you have the proper tools.
