'The Black Eyed Peas Experience' (ALL) Developer Interview

by Rainier on Aug. 18, 2011 @ 2:23 a.m. PDT

The Black Eyed Peas Experience features fun dance moves as well as hit songs from their multi-platinum selling albums, as well as dance routines arranged by the group’s famed creative director and choreographer, Fatima Robinson.

In the Xbox 360 version of the game, which Ubisoft is developing in partnership with renowned music game developers iNiS, players will control their on-screen avatar via the Kinect for Microsoft Xbox 360 entertainment system while following the dance moves of 3D avatars, including each of The Black Eyed Peas: apl.de.ap, Fergie, Taboo and will.i.am. The Wii version of The Black Eyed Peas Experience, being developed by Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Paris, will feature game play comparable to Ubisoft’s Just Dance titles, where players hold a Wii Remote and follow the moves of the The Black Eyed Peas’ on-screen avatars.

Q: Who is developing the game?

The Kinect version is being developed by INIS, the talented studio behind Elite Beat Agents and the Lips series. The Wii version is being developed by Ubisoft Quebec.

Q: On what platforms will The Black Eyed Peas Experience be available? Will it be available on the Wii U?

The game will be available initially on the Kinect for Xbox 360 and the Wii from Nintendo. We’ll let you know if we have more to share about other platforms later.

Q: Why have you chosen the BEP for the next Experience game?

Because they’re the world’s hottest group ! They’ve sold over 56 million records worldwide, they are the undisputed kings of party anthems, they’re great innovators of fashion, technology and entertainment, and when The Black Eyed Peas music is played, you can’t stop the party… you have to dance ! We wanted to deliver this amazing experience,  bringing The Black Eyed Peas to your living room to dance and party all night!

Q: How many tracks will be in the game, and how did you select the tracks?

There will be 25 tracks in the Wii game and 30 tracks in the Kinect game. The tracks featured in the game include all of the biggest hits, coolest dance moves and hottest music videos, hand-picked by The Black Eyed Peas.

Q: How did you choreograph the game?

The development teams worked with Fatima Robinson, the official Black Eyed Peas Creative Director/Choreographer who brought the moves from The Black Eyed Peas iconic music videos and concert footage into the game, ensuring the moves and style in the game closely match what fans have come to expect from their electrifying performances.

Q: There have been many dancing games lately, what is so special about this one?

The Black Eyed Peas Experience is the only dance game that features the BEP’s infectious beats, accessible hooks and crazy-fun dance moves to create the world’s biggest party. The moves of the game have been created with the help of Fatima Robison, The Black Eyed Peas creative Director/Choreographer.  The Kinect game is the 1st dance game where you actually control your avatar on screen, see what you are doing in real time, and interact with The Black Eyed Peas. Additionally, the Kinect version features an exclusive Dance Coach mode that you can trigger anytime by simply wave your hand to activate half-tempo coaching. The Kinect game also features an exclusive “choreography maker” mode, where you can create personalized choreography to your favorite songs and share your custom routines with your friends on Xbox Live.

Q: Will the game feature simultaneous multiplayer?

Yes, up to 4 players in the Wii version, and 2 players and 2 singers in the kinect version, with Jump In/Jump Out functionality.

Q: Will you be able to play one of the Peas?

Instead of performing as a Pea, players customize their avatar, learn the moves and polish their performance to prepare for the ultimate dance battle – facing off against the Peas as they challenge you to become a member of the group.

Q: Will it feature DLC?

Yes, the Kinect game will feature many additional tracks in DLC following the release

Q: How many venues will the game feature?

The Kinect game will feature 4 different venues, inspired by The Black Eyed Peas unique universe– perform like a Pea and unlock venue upgrades. In the Wii game, each of the 25 tracks is showcased in its own unique environment inspired by the group’s shows and music videos.

Q: What modes will the game feature?

The Kinect game will feature 2 modes:

  1. Party mode where you can perform with The Black Eyed Peas right from the start, on all of the 30 tracks of the game on the easiest level
  2. Career mode where you get familiar with each move one at the time and put them all together to battle The Black Eyed Peas. You can also trigger the integrated school mode by simply waving your hand at any time to activate half-tempo coaching. Career mode also lets you unlock fashion accessories for your avatar, new venues and venue upgrades and higher difficulty levels

Q: Will I be able to create my choreography?

Yes you will be able to create your own personalized choreography in the Kinect game thanks to the choreography maker mode. You’ll then be able to share your unique routines with your friends on Xbox Live challenging them to match your moves.

Q: Can you reveal the tracklist of the game?

We’ll be revealing new tracks on a regular basis until the release of the game in November.

Today we’re announcing :

  • I Gotta Feeling
  • Boom Boom Pow
  • The Time (Dirty Bit)
  • Let's Get It Started
  • Hey Mama

Q: What’s your target with this game?

Fans of The Black Eyed Peas will love this game, so will any fan of dance games and fun social/casual games in general.

Q: Are you going to use the player projection technology in The Black Eyed Peas Experience game?

The Black Eyed Peas Experience won’t utilize the Player-Projection technology, the game will instead feature the newest technology in the dance genre that will allow players to control their on-screen avatar and fully interact with The Black Eyed Peas.

Q: How many more The Experience titles will Ubisoft release? Who’s the next artist?

Right now our focus is on The Black Eyed Peas Experience and working with the group to make it the best game possible. The Experience brand is about making an artist’s world accessible, interactive and fun, so we look for artists that share those qualities.

Q: How much money did Ubisoft pay The Black Eyed Peas for the rights to this game?

We’re not discussing the financial terms of the deal.

Q: How involved has the group been in the game’s development?

The Black Eyed Peas have been very involved in the concept and development of the game (mocap session, voice over, videos, input on creative direction…), and will continue to be. From the music to the moves to the style, the group has given Ubisoft a lot of material to work with and great feedback.  Their official Creative Director/Choreographer has also been involved in the creation of the choreographies.

Q: How are Ubisoft’s Experience games different from Just Dance?

The Experience titles are about making iconic artists accessible to the fans and the dance community while interacting with them in your living room. Just Dance is more about dancing to a variety of songs and artists that span multiple genres of music across multiple years.

Q: Is the dance gaming space a “bubble,” like the guitar game genre?

Our previous dance titles have proved that people love to dance, so we think that as long as we keep delivering new and innovative ways to perform and party, like we’re doing with The Black Eyed Peas Experience, there will be an audience.

Q: What era of The Black Eyed Peas’ music is featured in the game?

The game will include The Black Eyed Peas’ biggest hits and many of their most popular dance tracks from their multi-platinum selling catalog. We will announce new tracks in the coming months.

Q: Will there be actual footage of The Black Eyed Peas’ music videos in the game?

Yes, we're going to incorporate The Black Eyed Peas’ music videos into the Kinect version of the game. We want players to feel immersed in The Black Eyed Peas world and to feel like they’re in their music videos, similar to Michael Jackson The Experience.

Q: Can you sing along with the game, too? Or is it strictly dancing?

Yes, players will be able to sing along with the on-screen lyrics. This is an optional feature. The Black Eyed Peas Experience is primarly about the dancing.
