When Dead Island pre-loaded and launched earlier today on Steam, a nasty glitch was discovered. The game being provided was not the correct version; instead, it was a developer's build that was not completely functional. However, Deep Silver informed us that the correct version of the title is now available on Steam, and fans can now download it.
Techland has also issued a day 1 patch (details below) but wanted to notify fans that due to the botched launch on Steam, this update may cause incompatibilities between the incorrect version of Dead Island that was released and the fixed version and cause a wipe of saved games. However, here's a solution to help regain some quest progress:
When the game opens, select New Game -> Select the same character as you were using before, and then there will be an option for "Chapter Select" which will allow the player to jump to the last chapter they were playing in.
Deep Silver plans to announce a “make up” to fans who were affected by the day 1 PC issues, stay tuned in coming days for those details as internal discussions are ongoing on their end.
The Bloodbath DLC is still on schedule as planned – fans who preordered the title will still receive the Bloodbath DLC when it launches (date TBA shortly!) as stated previously.
Deep Silver is also aware of The Ripper activation bug, which will not load as a result of the version update, and this will be fixed in the next game update, coming soon.

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customisation of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.
Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilising found items as weapons for self-defense and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.
In addition to satisfying even the most bloodthirsty action fan’s fantasy, Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all the while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the intense combat and immersive story with cooperative gameplay.
