'SimCity' Shows Off Multicity Play - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Dec. 11, 2012 @ 12:14 p.m. PST

SimCity is a true rebirth of the franchise that brings the depth of simulation that has been the series hallmark for more than two decades and marries it with next generation accessibility and a robust multiplayer mode, giving players the power to change a world together.

SimCity will engage an entirely new generation of PC gamers as they take charge of their own customized cities and build a world that co-exists alongside friends. For the first time in SimCity franchise history, players’ decisions will have long-lasting repercussions that will extend beyond their city limits. Together, players will address real global challenges such as climate change, the search for renewable resources and natural disasters.  It’s up to the players to decide whether to compete or collaborate to shape the world of tomorrow – for better or for worse.

With Multicity play, you no longer need to provide all the required city infrastructures in one city. Build a police station and share your growing police force with the greater region. Have your friend build a fire station in a neighboring city and soon you’ll see their fire trucks putting out flames in your city. Just like the world around you, neighboring cities support each other through shared resources. These are just a few examples of the Multicity play that you’ll see today in Stone’s gameplay strategy video.

Built from the ground up to be a fully connected experience, Multicity play in SimCity gives you the option to choose how you play. When you login and pick a region, you can decide to claim all the cities for yourself, invite your friends into your region to play alongside you, invite anyone in and make new friends, or join someone else’s region.

Right from the start, you will be able to learn lots of things about the region: who’s playing in the region, what cities are available to play in the region, what Great Works are currently in development and perhaps most importantly, what sorts of resources and advantages are available within each city space. Want to take on the role of a coal baron? Click on one of the available cities and see how much coal waits beneath the surface. Stuck without resources? Why not build yourself a Trashtopia and rake in the dough by collecting your neighbors’ garbage.

Maxis confirms that up to 16 cities will be playable in a single region and since we’ve built the game to be a Multi-city experience, you can play those cities by yourself, with your friends, or with the rest of the world.
