While earlier this week Square Enix stated that the new Tomb Raider sales were below expectations, Crystal Dynamics' Darrell Gallagher revealed during a GDC panel that Tomb Raider set a franchise sales record by being the fastest-selling title in the series, and declared it the "biggest opening" of the year with its 3.4 million units sold in three weeks.
If the two statements are contradictory, it could mean that Square Enix either set an unreasonably high sales mark, or that the game's development cost was so astronomically high that the 3.4 million units do not cover it.
