'Beatbuddy' Gets Polished By Rhianna Pratchett - Screens

Beatbuddy is a musical action-adventure where players take control of the eponymous Beatbuddy and navigate him through a unique musical world where each level is a song.

Music, rhythm and interaction with the elements of a particular tune take center-stage, as you explore, overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. It all boils down to playing music in an entirely new way! Since all the multi tracks of each song are translated in interactive game mechanics you’re able to experience music in a different way.

Pratchett, who has worked on numerous titles such as the Overlord series, Heavenly Sword, Mirror’s Edge, and the recently rebooted Tomb Raider, learned of Beatbuddy indie studio THREAKS from Grammy-nominated artist Austin Wintory who is creating an exclusive song and level for the game. She was instantly intrigued at the prospect of working with Wintory and the talented minds at THREAKS.

“No matter what you’ve written in the past, it’s the challenges and the people you work with who really matter,” said Pratchett. “I cut my teeth on smaller indie titles, so it’s great to get to do more work in that space again with the THREAKS team.”

Beatbuddy implements the innovative idea of allowing players to experience and influence the music in each action-adventure level. Players interact with the environment and a variety of creatures to open paths and solve puzzles throughout their journey. THREAKS has created a breathtaking experience through its patent-pending sound technology that syncs in-game animations with the music.

“When we started with the story of Beatbuddy last year, we initially held off contacting Rhianna because we assumed that she’d be too busy or might not be interested in a small indie project,” said Denis Rogic, art director of THREAKS. “It turned out that it was exactly the kind of thing she was looking for. It’s truly amazing knowing that we have Austin Wintory and Rhianna Pratchett providing their talents to our game.”
