If you’ve never heard of Spelunky, it’s a platformer with randomly-generated levels, making each playthrough a unique experience. The game is hard, but it’s rarely unfair, and when you die it’s usually in a hilarious way that involves some kind of ridiculous chain reaction. The difficulty and the randomization work together to give determined players a very rewarding experience – it’s common for people to persevere through thousands of deaths to beat Spelunky and uncover its most notorious treasure and secrets.
Originally released on PC in 2009, Mossmouth founder Derek Yu stated at the time of the XBLA announcement that "the original Spelunky doesn't need replacing." Now several years later, on the heels of the PS3, Vita announcement, things have changed and PC owners will be able to play the XBLA reboot of Spelunky after all.
The original "roguelike platformer" is returning to the place where it all started. This summer, PC owners will be able to play the XBLA reboot of Spelunky that won the 2012 IGF "Excellence in Design" Award, as well as Game of the Year Awards from publications like Gamespot and Edge. Spelunky will launch on Steam and GOG, followed shortly by the Humble Store.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Spelunky thus far - we're eternally grateful to fans of Spelunky Classic (which will remain free) and to our fans on the Xbox 360. We can't wait for PC, PS3, and PS Vita owners to join the HD adventure!
See you this summer!
