Inspired by the likes of BattleTech: Game of Armoured Combat and Mech Commander, Voxelfield brings a new slant to the genre with its advanced destruction mechanics - resulting in perhaps the first use of authentic physics in a voxel-based title.
With powerful, patented technology allowing for real-time, realistic environmental degredation, players can shape the world however they wish - using it either as refuge, or as a weapon in its own right.
You can hide in buildings, collapse structures on top of enemies, and much more besides. "Instead of scripted destruction that merely exchanges a intact model with a destroyed incarnation of it, our mechanics are a living breathing organism that allows a player to reshape however they want," said Pav Gmyterko, project manager at Psycho Interactive. "It opens up countless tactical possibilities."
Destroying the environments also opens up hidden levels of depth. "As you destroy things, you can discover the layers of every single element in the game," explained Gmyterko. "A car will have an engine, buildings have interior design, even small generators will have elements inside them that adds incredible detail and a geeky sense of immersion."
Psycho Interactive has launched a Kickstarter campaign, looking for £95,000 / $152,000 to take the game towards completion.
Stretch goals include a deathmatch mode (£110,000 / $176,000), a map editor (£140,000 / $224,000) and a collaborative sandbox mode (£330,000 / $528,000).
Psycho Interactive's new technology opened a number of doors for the team, as Gmyterko explains: "The technology that we patented is a method of displaying and processing voxels on GPU. We can include next-gen visual properties like emissive, reflective and specular, and can add physical properties to voxels, so we can simulate real-world materials.
"This extreme, unprecedented number of voxels was impossible for computers to process in real-time in the context of destruction without our technology - and that's without factoring in the addition of physical properties and advanced physics. The system took time and effort to build, but we're really pleased with the results."
