Telltale Games Suffers Massive Layoffs, Cancels Titles, Will Be Shutting Down

by Rainier on Sept. 21, 2018 @ 3:08 p.m. PDT

A bad day for the gaming industry as Telltale Games confirmed earlier rumors about massive layoffs at the studio known for episodic titles such as The Walking Dead, Batman: The Enemy Within, The Wolf Among Us and Game Of Thrones.

Earlier today rumors started swirling that Telltale Games had let go most of its 250 employees after an earlier round or dismissals (90) last November.

Several employees that were let go revealed that a skeleton crew of 25 will probably continue to work on the remaining episodes for  The Walking Dead: The Final Season (Ep. 2 is scheduled for next week), but fans that were waiting for new seasons of Batman: The Enemy Within and The Wolf Among Us will be disappointed to hear that those have been canceled.

We reached out to Telltale Games PR for an official statement and received a confirmation of the firings and closure.

Today Telltale Games made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges. A majority of the company's employees were dismissed earlier this morning, with a small group of 25 employees staying on to fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners. CEO Pete Hawley issued the following statement:

"It's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry."

Telltale will issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks.

Earlier this year Telltale Games has signed on to develop episodic content for Netflix's popular Stranger Things TV series, the first one using their new engine, but we will have to await further details on what will happen with that.
