'Woodpunk' (ALL) Celebrates Chinese New Year With New Features and Content

by Rainier on Feb. 4, 2019 @ 8:26 a.m. PST

Woodpunk is a fast-paced roguelike retro shooter, set in an alternate Medieval Era with futuristic inventions and warfare.

Players take over the role of Aquinas, a genius inventor. His weapons are randomly assembled from independent modules, allowing for wild combinations like ice-shotguns, wooden chainsaws or bomb-firing machineguns - over 1400 unique weapons are possible with this system, helping greatly in fighting of the hordes of enemies swarming the screen, as well as the gigantic bosses.

As with the weapons, Woodpunk’s levels are created dynamically and everything on screen, from buildings and walls to carts, boxes or any other object, can be destroyed. Gameplay is happening in real time and features a mixture of harsh, relentless action, requiring strong reflexes and a fair amount of battle strategy.

Players don’t need to face the challenges alone however, as Aquinas has built a faithful wooden robot companion, Theo, to help him out in the feast of mayhem, explosions and chaos that is Woodpunk. The AI-controlled Theo can be taken over by a second player to support Aquinas on his challenging quest with various skills, including creating new weapons, going into turret-mode or transforming into a wall to protect against enemies.

After the great response to the Christmas Update containing a winter theme filled with Christmas assets, a powerful new boss and a new “Santapunk” battle suit for the game’s main character Aquinas, this new update is fully focused on celebrating the Chinese New Year on February 5th.  It contains a variety of new art assets as well as new themed in-game objects and surroundings.

In addition to these new visual enhancements, the update will also contain several new features to further enhance the gameplay experience of Woodpunk. The most significant new feature consists of a fully revamped weapons creation system following requests from the game’s community.

While previously the game would supply the players with new, procedurally generated weapon combinations after each single stage, the new mechanic will allow players to keep their weapon when transitioning to the next stage. This comes at a cost however: To keep the game’s balance while incorporating this feature, Woodpunk now introduces a system where weapons will degrade over time, requiring the player to either repair them or have their trusty robot companion Theo create a completely new weapon. The new system maintains the game’s standout feature of allowing for hundreds of different weapon combinations during play, while giving players the option to focus on individually preferred weapon choices. “Tinkerpunk”, a new suit introduced in this update, will cater to this new mechanic.

In addition to this major new feature, the update will also bring a series of further gameplay features, including another brand new Chinese themed suit for Aquinas, “Dragonpunk”, incorporating new special abilities.

Key Features

  • Fast-paced, action-packed rogue like gameplay in 60 FPS
  • Wide arsenal of procedurally generated weapons
  • Battle massive waves of enemies at a time, along with powerful bosses!
  • Persistent, fully destroyable environments
  • Singleplayer and local coop multiplayer

Woodpunk is currently available on PC, with Xbox One and PS4 versions scheduled for Q1 of 2019.
