'Lydia' Comes To Nintendo Switch - Screens

by Rainier on Jan. 3, 2020 @ 8:10 a.m. PST

Lydia is a grim, dark and atmospheric story-driven adventure game revolving around alcoholism, and especially how it affects children.

Lydia is a story game in the vein of To the Moon.

Spectacular gray-scale graphics with a hint of color and dark, ambient original soundtrack sets the tone for the melancholic story. Lydia is an emotional journey to the depths of the imagination of a small child.

The tale of a girl who wishes for a happy childhood but can never have it. Grow up with Lydia, witness and try to understand the feelings, behaviors and events that molded critical moments of her life. How may a little girl full of imagination perceive the twisted and manipulative family dynamics? How do you fight a monster you can’t see?

Lydia is a sweet little girl who loves her Teddy very much. Teddy has been with Lydia from the very beginning. Lydia can’t remember living or playing without him. Lydia has never adventured nor found crickets from the nearby playground without him. Lydia loves Teddy and Teddy loves her back.

Recently they’ve had difficulties sleeping. There are a lot of loud noises coming from downstairs. The adults are having their own adventures there. Every night, all the time.

And of course there is the Monster. It is always there, hiding somewhere in the shadows where the eye can’t see. Adults said that the monster isn’t real, that it’s all just imagination. But the adults are wrong. The monster is real, although Teddy keeps telling that it isn’t. He keeps telling that everything’s going to be all right.

Teddy will always be there, watching Lydia. Keeping the monster away. Making sure, that Lydia can sleep through the night.

But this time the sounds are louder than usual.

Nakana.io will release Lydia on Nintendo Switch on January 17, with a unique DLC which serves as a donation system to support the non-profit organization Fragile Childhood preventing and diminishing harms caused by parental alcohol/substance abuse.

The content that players will get is a coloring book of monsters that Lydia can only paint with happy colors, as a metaphor to making monsters less scary both in-game and in real life.

“Our Finnish studio is focusing on narrative-driven games that motivate change. Lydia is someone who wishes for a happy childhood but can never have it. People with similar experiences will see this, so hopefully the game is really genuine and respectful.” –- Henri Tervapuro, graphic novel artist and co-author of this self-inspired story.

“We are a new publisher of games that share a strong experience to remember. We try to grow real changes from the seeds of their message, like with the #LydiaDonation DLC.” – Mikaël Bourget, founder of the publishing label.

Key Features:

  • Story first: Compact structure serves the story. The game lasts about 1.5 hours.
  • Gray-scale hand-drawn graphics by published graphic novel artist Henri Tervapuro.
  • Original score is composed by renowned film composer Juhana Lehtiniemi.

Currently available for PC/Mac (Steam), Lydia will be coming to Nintendo Switch on January 17, 2020.
