'A Year of Rain' Early Access Development Abandoned, Servers Shutting Down

by Rainier on Feb. 7, 2020 @ 8:46 a.m. PST

A Year of Rain is a multiplayer real time strategy game, featuring heroes, an extensive story mode and heavily emphasizes team gameplay.

This new fantasy real time strategy game has been built from the ground-up to accommodate advanced teamplay with players able to team up with their friends or AI helpers in game modes that are optimized for 2 vs 2 combat including campaign mode, "Against All Odds" survival mode and competitive multiplayer modes.

A Year Of Rain combines classic real-time strategy elements with a strong focus on hero units. Both the co-op campaigns and online and offline modes are being designed with a team of two in mind, whether you play with a human or AI player. The classic 2v2 skirmish mode is being developed for competitive matches from the very start. Meanwhile, “Against all Odds“ is an innovation in the genre where two lone heroes face two entire armies, who have full command of units and structures.

In this team RTS, you can choose one of three rival factions and get immersed in a gameplay mixture of base building, resource gathering, and unit training. Structures and units can be upgraded in order to enhance efficiency and power. With your carefully assembled army led by a legendary hero, you will be able to fight alongside the noble House Rupah, the Wild Outcasts or join the Restless Undead. A battle without mercy begins.

Daedalic Entertainment's RTS A Year Of Rain launched on Steam Early Access in November 2019, but barely 3 months later is being abandoned due to disappointing sales and low player base. In addition Daedalic Entertainment's majority stakeholder, Bastei Lübbe AG, is not happy at all with the developer/publisher's continued struggles and is considering restructuring Daedalic.

"We have decided to put the active development of A Year Of Rain on hold and minimize recurring costs by replacing the official game servers with a new P2P System. You will still be able to play multiplayer matches by opening up a lobby that others can join but there will not be any automatic matchmaking anymore.

This means as well, that Leaderboards and player statistics will disappear, but, as a positive side effect, portraits and titles are automatically unlocked from the beginning.

For now, there will be no further additions or significant improvements to the game. Unfortunately, this means that some of the changes we were working on – like the revamped pathfinding – will not be coming.

Currently we had to choose between the existing pathfinding system, which is not working ideally but functional, and the new pathfinding system, which is more advanced but simply not yet functional at all. There are just no easy or quick solutions for this situation, since the low sales and player base restrict us from finalizing the new pathfinding.

Thank you for the overwhelming support you have shown since we launched. You gave us the needed strength to deal with the very painful decision we had to make. Hopefully we made up to it with this specific way of handling the unfortunate circumstances.

Best Regards - The A Year Of Rain Team"
