'Barotrauma' Early Access Update Overhauls Campaign, Adds NPCs, Outposts And More - Trailer

by Rainier on July 30, 2020 @ 6:00 a.m. PDT

Barotrauma is a co-op multiplayer sci-fi submarine survival game in which your submarine crew fights for underwater survival in the far reaches of our solar system.

In Barotrauma, up to 16 players manage intricate submarine systems to survive in sub-zero temperatures and explore an alien ocean. The co-op multiplayer simulation will go into Steam Early Access this spring.

Barotrauma is set in the near future where intrepid adventurers have fled Earth and settled on Jupiter's watery moon Europa. In this inhospitable environment, human life is only possible in the ocean deep below the moon’s frozen surface, and this is where you and your (hopefully) brave crew come in. But it’s not just humans who fight for survival in the depths…

As a member of a submarine crew, you are tasked with directing your vessel through dangerous surroundings, exploring alien ruins and completing difficult missions. Players must manage all kinds of on-board systems, such as the nuclear reactor, sonar, guns, machines and more. Thanks to a complex crafting system, the crew can create tools, medicines and weapons to aid their survival.

It is important to act quickly and strategically, especially when faced with unexpected catastrophes. Including the role of captain, there are five different classes, and up to 16 players can join the crew of one submarine. Procedurally generated levels and events make for almost endless adrenaline-filled fun – whether you dive into the depths with your friends or just watch other players’ struggle against the dangers lurking below.

Publisher Daedalic and independent studios FakeFish and Undertow Games proudly announce “New Frontiers”, the biggest update to the unique Sci-Fi submarine simulation Barotrauma since Steam Early Access started last June.

“New Frontiers” further enriches the game by adding a campaign-based journey with a mysterious destination in the depths of Europa. Multiple aspects of the game have been improved to create a real sense of progression in the campaign mode, and a work-in-progress ending has been implemented together with an accessible endgame location.

Update:

  • Outposts: The crew is now able to physically reach and explore outposts at the start and endpoint of a mission. AI inhabitants and randomized events keep the outposts alive. Players can trade, restock equipment, hire new crewmates and more.
  • Submarines: The crew's swimming home base will develop throughout the journey. Beginning with a modest sub, players are able to update and modify the hull, different machinery and weaponry as they progress. All available improvements apply to modded ships as well, so the community can seamlessly integrate their own creations into the campaign.
  • Crewmates: The heart of the game, the submarine’s crew, is no longer randomized between campaign missions when playing with bots. Every crewmate becomes a valuable part of the mission and can be individually trained, so you should not use them as expendable cannon fodder. The bot AI was also improved.
  • In-game economy: Players are able to sell items, prices are balanced and different items are available at different locations in the game.
  • Visuals: The developers visually overhauled the majority of sprites in the game and revised the campaign map.

Barotrauma is now available on Steam Early Access for PC/Mac/Linux at $29.99/£21.49 GBP/€24.99.
