'Frequency: Chernobyl' Announced - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Sept. 14, 2020 @ 7:41 p.m. PDT

Frequency: Chernobyl is a mystical puzzle adventure in which you take on the role of an amateur radio enthusiast Val who has dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of Number Stations.

The investigation leads him deep into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, where he will have to face off against a bizarre temporal anomaly when an elusive radio signal turns out to carry the voices of people from the distant year of 1986.

To accurately recreate the terrain of Pripyat, the crumbling equipment, outdated radio codes and their principles of operation the developers have visited the area that serves as the background to the game’s story and largely relied on archive materials as well as renowned specialists’ expertise.

The story follows Val who has just decrypted a mysterious transmission with his friends, believing it to be the long sought after Chaos signal. Following the coordinates they have thus acquired, the protagonist makes his way to one of the most mysterious locations in the world — the abandoned “Duga” radio station.

Upon activating an old console, he begins to hear voices and messages from the Soviet past. But what are they trying to tell him?

Encrypted radio broadcasts will be the main type of in-game puzzles that the player must unravel in order to make progress. Luckily, our hero has come prepared and can rely on his friends to give him clues, but reaching the end will require the player to strain both their thoughts and their ears as the game uses nearly two dozen types of encryption methods!

Can you solve the mystery of the white noise at the Chernobyl Duga?

Key Features:

  • Complex Puzzles: You will find yourself in the role of a real amateur radio enthusiast and have to unravel secret ciphers in order to get out of the restricted Exclusion Zone. The game offers a variety of riddles and non-standard problems that are bound to have most players scratching their heads!
  • Addicting Gameplay: Communicating with the voices from the distant 1986 will require you to learn to operate old-school radio machinery. Unconventional gameplay will catch the interest of both real-life radio enthusiasts as well as more casual players looking for an original challenge.
  • Authentic Environment: The terrain of Pripyat, the crumbling equipment, outdated radio codes and principles of operation, as well as elements of the stalker lifestyle have been carefully recreated using real-life examples and materials with the expertise of radio experts and Chernobyl explorers.
  • At the junction of fiction and realism...: The story, filled with motives of mystery and loneliness, will appeal to both meticulous connoisseurs of the Soviet post-apocalyptic genre as well as all players who are eager to try something new.

Frequency: Chernobyl is coming to PC (Steam).
