Apex Legends delivers a squad-based battle royale experience with a uniquely Respawn flavor. Players will select from one of eight Legends - each with their own unique abilities and playstyles - and the last team standing wins. Combatants can choose from unique characters like Bloodhound, the tracker who can see recent enemy activity on the map, or Lifeline, a battlefield medic who can shield teammates and bring them back from the brink of death. Balanced squads and teamwork are critical, as each Legend is easy to pick up and learn, but challenging to master.
Apex Legends showcases several new genre-leading innovations, starting before players even start the match. Once players are ready to begin, they’ll choose their drop point with the Jumpmaster system, giving each squad full control over exactly where they drop in. Is it smarter to head straight for the most valuable loot and risk early conflict with other teams, or make for one of the outlying areas to plot an attack and let other squads pick each other off?
During EA Play Live, Respawn and EA revealed that Apex Legends: Emergence, the next major update for the critically acclaimed competitive multiplayer experience, will launch to players worldwide on August 3, 2021.
In preparation for Emergence, Respawn has released a new launch trailer that provides the deepest look at new Legend Seer, a glimpse of the latest weapon making its way into the game’s arsenal, and the chaos both will bring to the arena.
Additionally, EA introduced Year 2 of the ALGS following a successful first season of the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS). The inaugural ALGS Championship in June, which saw hundreds of the world’s best squads vying for a piece of the franchise-record $2.5 million prize pool, achieved record-setting viewership with over 3.5 million hours watched around the world and a cumulative AMA of over 180,000 for the North America Finals.
In addition, Chad Grenier, the game director on Apex Legends, shared a series of additional updates at EA Play Live including:
- New Legend Enters the Arena: Seer, a powerful new recon Legend, joins the ever-expanding roster of diverse characters in Emergence. Today fans were given a first-look at his abilities and how he offers a new way to track down and hunt opponents - even through walls.
- Ranked Arenas: Emergence will mark the next major update to Apex Legend’s new competitive 3v3 mode, Arenas, with the launch of Ranked Arenas. Ranked Arenas will give players the ability to climb the ranks and show off their skill rating (e.g. Bronze, Silver, Gold, all the way up to Predator), testing their might against other evenly matched competitors through the underlying matchmaking rating score. Additional information on Ranked Arenas can be found in the blog post here.
- Year 2 of Apex Legends Global Series: EA also announced what’s in store for the new season of the ALGS. For Year 2, the Base Prize Pool is climbing to $5 million, crossplay competition is bringing Xbox and PlayStation into the mix, along with Pro League and Challenger Circuit competitions. You can read the full breakdown including schedule, format, eligibility and more on the official Apex Legends blog here.
Apex Legends: Emergence will launch on August 3, 2021 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Origin and Steam.
The innovations don’t stop there as Apex Legends also delivers Respawn Beacons, one-time use locations where defeated teammates can be revived, a contextual Ping communication system that allows players to call out enemies, weapons, locations and more with the push of a button, and an intelligent inventory system which automatically attaches gear and equipment to the appropriate weapons once players pick them up. All together it creates a battle royale experience unlike any other, complete with Respawn’s commitment to top-notch quality and fun.
Apex Legends is now available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
