Final Fantasy XVI is a standalone single player action-RPG.

In an immersive world built by talented developers, including Kazutoyo Maehiro (Creative Director & Original Screenplay), Michael-Christopher Koji Fox (Localization Director) and more, Final Fantasy XVI brings players into the realm of Valisthea, where Eikons are powerful and deadly creatures that reside within Dominants— single men or women who are blessed with the ability to call upon their dreaded power.

Final Fantasy XVI will take you on a seamless, story-driven, white-knuckle ride that will rival even the most thrilling roller-coaster. The story follows Clive Rosfield, a young man dedicated to mastering the blade, who is dubbed the First Shield of Rosaria and tasked to guard his younger brother Joshua—the Dominant of the Phoenix.

Unexpected events set Clive on a dark and dangerous road to revenge.

 The 'Ambition' trailer gives players a more in-depth look at Final Fantasy XVI’s backstory, including the realm of Valisthea and its rich cast of characters they will encounter in the game, including Dominants – single men and women who are blessed with the ability to call upon a dread power, which is unlike anything ever seen in the series.

“I'm happy to announce that our newest trailer—Ambition—is now live. Rather than focusing on action as we did in our last reveal, this time we wanted to give the world a more in-depth look at Final Fantasy XVI's lore and its rich cast of characters—with the Dominants front and centre. As the game edges closer to completion, the team has turned its full attention to debugging and final adjustments. Now that things are starting to come together, the game is sizing up to be something truly special,” commented Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida.

This includes a look at some Dominants - individuals who are blessed with the ability to call upon the power of dangerous creatures called Eikons. Some nations revere these powerful figures, others send them to the frontlines as weapons of war - and, as the trailer reveals, you’ll learn a lot about them over the course of the game.

A new shadow rises to fall upon the Dominants, painting their destinies black as night.

It has been fifteen hundred years since the fall of our forebears, and Valisthea has been slowly dying ever since. Darkness spreads as day gives way to twilight, the Mothers' flame now all but a flicker. And as the fringes fade, the people flock to the Mothercrystals.

The flames of war spread as Valisthea enters an age of twilight. Where will fate lead the Dominants and what future awaits the realm at the end of this bitter conflict? There are still many more questions to be answered, many more truths to be uncovered.

Dion Lesage - the Dominant of Bahamut

Dion Lesage is the crown prince of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and leads its noblest order of knights: the Dragoons. He’s also the Dominant of Bahamut, the Dragon King.

This warrior prince is beloved among his people. His ability to turn the tide of battle means that songs of his heroism and the power of Bahamut are common among Sanbrequois bards.

But shadows are gathering in the Empire - and they may be enough to quell Bahamut’s light…

Barnabas Tharmr - The Dominant of Odin

Barnabas Tharmr arrived on the shores of Ash as a wanderer - with not land or title of his own. It was his skill with a blade that won him a kingdom.

Although the local beastmen revolted against his rule, Barnabas used the power of his Eikon, Odin, to quell their uprising near single-handedly, and successfully brought the entire Eastern continent under the Waloeder banner.

Barnabas may have an army and navy that rival any other in Valisthea under his command, but he’s still drawn to where the fighting is thickest - riding his spectral steed and sundering his enemies with his fabled black blade. Or sometimes you’ll see him observing the chaos from the sidelines, a grisly gleam of fascinating in his eyes.

Final Fantasy XVI is being developed for the PS5 as a timed exclusive, scheduled for Summer 2023. No other platforms have been confirmed yet.
