On the 40th anniversary of the release of the cult film "Cannibal Holocaust", director Ruggero Deodato announces the fourth, highly awaited chapter of his cannibals cycle, with great news: the new episode will not be a movie, but a videogame created in collaboration with Fantastico Studio.
Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare is a 2D point and click graphic adventure in which we relive the terrible story of the characters returning from the expedition in Borneo.
We are at the end of the 90s. Pierce is the owner of Bloody Disgusting, a "shock site" that makes splatter film publishing its main activity. In front of him, in his Chicago studio, are Jessica, his historical collaborator and Alessandro, an Italian video-reporter, visibly shaken up.
They have just returned from an expedition to Borneo that he financed, to retrieve from Josh, a friend of Alessandro's, a tape in which disgusting acts of cannibalism by a local tribe were filmed.
But not everything went as planned...
The themes are the ones that made the saga popular: natives' lives, told in its rawness, and cannibalism, powerful metaphors that reveal the most disturbing and deep impulses in our society.
Starting on Tuesday, October 26th, it will be possible to play a small but scary Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare demo on Steam
Originally the game was a visual novel called "Cannibal" that would be completed by the end of 2020. We spent some months working on a demo, and the result was fine but after careful consideration, we decided that Ruggero Deodato deserves something better.
In the meantime, we were forced to change the title of the game because it was too similar to Cannibal Holocaust, and could have created legal problems. We decided to call it Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare given the strong emotional bond between Ruggero Deodato and that magnificent island and because, obviously, the game is partly set there.
Unfortunately, like many of our colleagues, we had to stop production during the months of Covid lockdown. As a consequence, our company has found itself in economic difficulties. We have been forced to focus on smaller projects that can monetize faster.
Now we can finally get back to work on Borneo and this time in an even more ambitious way. The game is now a first-person 3D horror adventure.
It’ll be ready by 2024. We’ve spent the last 3 months working on a demo to show you our new game idea. We hope that you like it.
Borneo: A Jungle Nightmareis a project we care a lot about and which we hope can continue to feed the legend of one of the greatest Italian cult directors, Ruggero Deodato.
The setting, made vivid and believable by the fantastic illustrations of the artist Solo Macello, is divided between Pierce's studio in the United States, the virgin jungles of BORNEO and other hidden locations.
The player's goal will be to find out what really happened during the expedition and to understand if Jessica and Alessandro are really people we can trust. To do this, the player will be able to interact with the characters to talk to them or to perform contextual actions related to the story at that time.
In Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare there will also be gameplay moments in which the player will be asked to be cold-blooded and have the right timing to overcome tricky situations.
The game has two endings, which will be unlocked depending on the amount of information collected or the choices made by the players during their adventure.
On February 7, 1980, Cannibal Holocaust, the second film in Ruggero Deodato's trilogy dedicated to his cannibals saga, was released in Italy. The film immediately generated controversy and harsh criticism due to an excessive realism for the time, which induced public and critics to consider the work an authentic "snuff movie". In a short time, however, it was re-evaluated and considered a masterpiece, destined to influence the cinematographic language of the years to come.
Universally recognized as an anticipator of the "found footage" genre - the fake documentary -, made famous more than a decade later by films such as the Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield; beloved by Quentin Tarantino, who considers it one of the best genre Italian movie, and by Eli Roth, who considers Deodato an authentic mentor and wanted him for a cameo in the second chapter of "Hostel".
Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare (previously known as Deodato's Cannibal) will be available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024.
