'Valheim' Early Access 'Mountain' Update Adds Frost Caves, Enemies, Resources And Armor

by Rainier on March 1, 2022 @ 1:33 a.m. PST

Valheim is an exploration and survival game set in a procedurally generated world, offering players unlimited freedom to build and live the saga of their dreams, cooperatively or alone.

Are you worthy of entering Valhalla? You have been sent to Valheim, the 10th Norse world. Only by defeating the mighty beasts of these lands will you win the favor of the gods. This quest will take you to the far reaches of this world, from the deepest forest to the highest mountain peak.

Valheim is an open-world exploration survival game set in a vast procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by norse mythology and viking culture. Players are tasked with taking back the realm from the ancient enemies of Odin, building mead halls and castles, crafting weapons and armour, and sailing the seas in search of new horizons and win the favor of the gods.

Valheim is a game about exploring a huge fantasy world inspired by norse mythology and viking culture. You start your adventure at the relatively peaceful center of Valheim. The further from the center you travel, the more challenging the world becomes. But you will also find more valuable materials that you can use to craft deadlier weapons and sturdier armor. You will also build your own viking strongholds and outposts all over the world. Eventually you will build a mighty longship and sail the great oceans in search of exotic lands … but be wary of sailing too far...

Valheim is a huge procedurally-generated world, inviting players to explore lush forests, snow-topped mountain ranges and mystical meadows, all presented in striking Lo-Fi graphics. Valheim offers a dodge & block based combat system with a wide range of weapons for deathless vikings to battle primordial bosses of myth and legend. The viking adventure is playable solo, or with up to nine friends as no one wants to repeatedly face death alone. Between deaths, Valheim offers a flexible house and base building system, intuitive item crafting and ship building, and dedicated servers.

Coffee Stain Publishing and Iron Gate Studio are delighted to announce the launch of a new Valheim update that will give adventurers an even frostier reception in the harsh Mountain biome.

The Mountain update expands Valheim’s snowy biome and adds brand-new instanced dungeons called Frost Caves, similar to the Burial Chambers found in the Black Forest and Sunken Crypts situated in the Swamps. The Frost Caves offer three new enemies, with new resources to gather, and new materials required to craft a new armour and weapon set.

Only the bravest Vikings can venture into the quiet shadows that lurk in these caves to discover the ancient evil that creeps at night and pillage its treasures. Can you hear that? Is that…a ritual chant? And these…are these claw marks?

“We wanted to flesh out the Mountain biome a lot more,” said Henrik Törnqvist, co-founder of Iron Gate Studio. “The goal was to give Mountains a similar challenge in close quarters to what players can find in the Swamps and the Black Forest, as well as a chance to square off against new feral enemies. You might have noticed a couple fenrings stalking the peaks at night, but did you ever think about where they go when the dawn comes?”

The newest content update comes in the wake of Valheim’s one-year-anniversary of its Early Access Launch, and not long after the release of the Hearth & Home update that saw an array of new crafting and cooking recipes, building pieces and resources added throughout the five biomes that Valheim currently offers. Since Hearth & Home, Iron Gate Studio has worked on multiple updates featuring new enemies, armour and cosmetic additions, as well as a Steam Deck port that was recently announced in the game’s one-year-anniversary Steam post.

Mistlands, the sixth biome that is next on the developers’ plan, will offer Vikings new enemies to tackle, new resources to acquire, and an end boss to face as the world of Valheim continues to grow through Early Access.

“Valheim at its core is a game in which every resource, decision and item you find can be used for something, and fits in the bigger picture,” Albert Säfström, CEO of Coffee Stain Publishing added. “Hearth & Home and the Mountain update have expanded those options and experiences that players can encounter and interact with. We’re excited to see what players will find in the depths of the Mountains.”

Valheim is now available through Steam Early Access for $19.99.
