A co-op MMORTS from a team of veteran city builder developers, Romans: Age of Caesar is the latest historical strategy game from Stronghold developers Firefly Studios. In Romans players must rebuild the empire as they gather resources, re-establish trade routes and protect shared city states from barbarian invasion!

Following the success of Stronghold Kingdoms, prototyping began on a spiritual successor that would become Romans: Age of Caesar. Building on their legacy of Roman sim games, Firefly went about designing an online city builder with thousands of players working together to rebuild the great cities of Rome. The result is a shared world builder that returns to the classic Roman setting designer Simon Bradbury and producer Eric Ouellette made their name with before founding Firefly Studios in 1999.

Experience classic city builder gameplay online as you build, trade and fight alongside fellow players in a shared open world. With up to 16 players per city, governors must cooperate to grow and begin rebuilding the empire.

Beyond your district lies an expansive empire map filled with new settlements, unique resources and growing threats. Forge alliances with otherwise rival city states, revive the republic and restore the Roman Empire to its former glory!

Engage in tactical combat to push back barbarian frontiers in PvE or engage in political warfare, forging alliances to claim glory in epic PvP battles. Draw blood or work alongside fellow governors, defeating common threats and building the prosperity of your shared city states.

With the ultimate goal to be crowned Caesar, players must carefully work their way into the senate. Earn the confidence of your political partners and either rise with them through the lower chambers or betray former allies when it suits you best. Manoeuvre between different loyalties, positions and even gods, to remain politically nimble and succeed in your final quest for power.

As we approach the Steam launch of Romans: Age of Caesar on April 27th, we wanted to discuss Rome (or Roma as Aaron likes to say it) and its hold on our lives and imagination. Through its influence across law, architecture, trade, military tactics, art and craftsmanship, ancient Rome has its hold on developers worldwide.

Today we're incredibly excited to talk about why the Eternal City of Echoes and the empire that blossomed from its industrious seed came to be the setting for our latest and most ambitious online game, Romans: Age of Caesar. Gaming is unique in its capacity to allows players to actively engage with historical settings, making your experience far more personal as a result of being active participants, instead of just passive observers.

While every genre chooses different dimensions of Roman civilization to examine, we’re particularly interested in bringing to life architectural, economic and political planning needed to transform a city on the southern Italian peninsula into an continent-spanning empire that lasted for centuries through natural disasters, civil wars, barbarian invasions and power-hungry tyrants.

Likewise, the advances in technology have meant that in every aspect, from music and design to visual art and gameplay, the ways in which we can artistically recreate and represent Roman life has evolved over the years, with new avenues for technical experimentation while building upon the classic city-building heritage that Firefly Studios is known for.
