Game is currently in development - playtest experience is limited (larger playtests are coming), feedback for bugs and balance issues are greatly appreciated

Available to players in EU and NA (USA & Canada)

Q: What should the community expect to see in the game at full release that we won’t see in initial playtests?

A: The short answer: a lot. In our first Closed Alpha, our focus is on testing the core experience, how the game feels and plays, and our backend infrastructure. There are aspects of the experience that will change and some that are missing entirely right now. We want our community to be mindful of that when they get their hands on our first alpha build.

Q: You mentioned 12 players (4 teams) per round - is that set in stone, and if not, how many might you consider?

A: Currently, and for the Closed Alpha, we’re testing our extraction game mode with four teams of three. This is not, however, set in stone. Both game modes, and team setups are part of the aspects of the experience that will expand and change.

Q: Will there be skill- and/or rank-based matchmaking?

A: Not in Closed Alpha. But definitely for later, larger tests / launch.

Q:What has been the most challenging aspect of making this game for Embark Studios?

A: Games are challenging to make in so many ways. This game is certainly no exception, especially considering it’s implementing technology that hasn’t been tried on a wide scale before. Building and implementing our server-based movement & destruction system that powers the environmental dynamism in THE FINALS has been one of these particularly challenging aspects of this development.

Q: Can you provide a bit more detail about how players can modify their characters? What features, cosmetics, and gameplay skills? Maybe provide a few examples?

A: This game a hero builder that lets you choose how you want to play and the way you look. For Closed Alpha players will choose between three player types (heavy, medium, and light), that they’re able to modify to a really large degree. These types have unique weapons, gadgets, attributes (like hp and movement speed), unique attributes, and visual customization options. This means a big variety of potential builds and unique playstyles.

Q: How many weapons, gadgets and abilities will be available in the playtest?

A: For Closed Alpha, we’re testing 42 different weapons, gadgets, and abilities.

Q: How many maps will be in the playtest? How much will the maps vary in size?

A: For Closed Alpha, we’re testing one map, based on the Old Town of Monaco. We are, however, working on several arenas. These differ in size, setting, and level attributes (like open distances). For now, we’re not announcing any arenas beyond Monaco, so stay tuned.

Q: Can you elaborate on getting to the finals and the length of rounds?

A: This is one aspect of the game that isn't fully fleshed out in Closed Alpha compared to what will be in the game at later tests / launch, so we want to be a bit careful setting too fixed expectations around this. With that being said, sessions are 8 minutes in length, and in the Alpha build, we have three stages in each match.

Q: Part of the trailer showed throwing something on fire that looked like it exploded. Seems cool. Any info you want to share on throwing things?

A: Yes throwing things is definitely a part of the game. Barrels and other physical items in the games are interactable and throwable. And yes, you can put them on fire. So what you saw in the trailer is surely a relevant aspect of the experience and how THE FINALS is played.

Q: Are there other movement-related gadgets - saw the grappling gun things, zip lines, and foam launcher from the trailer, anything else you wanted to mention?

A: Traversal is one key factor that contestants can shape in THE FINALS through attributes, gadgets, and abilities. The items you mentioned are certainly some of the key traversal gadgets / abilities in the Alpha build. With that said, full destruction allows for all kinds of other creative ways to move around. What is to say C4 isn’t a traversal gadget when a house stands in your way?

Q: What is server-side movement & destruction?

A: Server-side movement & destruction has been a holy grail in game development for a long time and we’re really proud to have made it a reality in THE FINALS. Rather than having movement physics running on the client-side (ie the computer you run the game on), environment movement happens on the server. That implies there’s a single truth for physics, for all players at the same time. In turn, that allows for physics-driven movement on indeterministic surfaces. Yeah, that’s a mouthful, we know, but it means that players can move at the same time on moving platforms, in a multiplayer setting. Or that you and your friends can experience being in the same collapsing house together, in sync. We will be diving into this topic in more depth in the future, so stay tuned. It’s an exciting topic, and it fundamentally changes the way dynamic multiplayer can be played.
