'Galactic Crew II' Leaving Early Access After Two Years, Gets Release Date

by Rainier on Jan. 19, 2023 @ 6:25 p.m. PST

Galactic Crew II is a roguelike space exploration game inspired by FTL and the classic XCOM games.

Galactic Crew II is a roguelike sci-fi exploration game that takes place in a procedurally generated galaxy full of ruthless criminals, notorious pirates, monsters, miners, and merchants.

With nary any credits or crew, you have to acquire goods, mine, and loot to build up your spaceship and crew to contend with the harshness of this galaxy. A wrong decision could bring death to you and your crew. Will you risk your life and ship to obtain the goods you need to survive this galaxy?

Different galaxies are yours to navigate at the press of a button and the warp of a jump gate. Each new planet is an opportunity to leave your stamp on the universe. Build colonies with resources mined in asteroid belts, raid nearby dungeons for loot, get your spaceship in top shape with shipyards and start new adventurous missions at the next space station.

Explore an endless number of procedurally generated planets offering unique experiences in various settings from crashed spaceships to pirate hideouts, miner outposts, medieval villages, archeological dig sites, or pure horror scenarios. Colonize any number of planets by establishing fully customizable outposts. Each new room that you build adds new features like managing trade routes to space stations, mining, manufacturing, and storage solutions.

Galactic Crew II had its Steam Early Access release in early 2021. In the past two years, a lot of content was added, bugs were fixed, and new members joined this galactic crew every month. The game’s development will now come to a conclusion with the release on 8th May 2023!

Support and bug fixes will follow after the game’s release, but feature development will be officially concluded. Not only were all promises from the Early Access campaign fulfilled, but the continuous stream of new players and increased ratings show the game’s success.

Here are some of many highlights from the Early Access campaign.

Economy & Colonization

The first major update featured a complete overhaul of the tutorial system based on the feedback of this amazing community. The process of creating new games was enriched by new character backgrounds and professions.

The colonization system was the major feature addition in Galactic Crew II and the first major update added new rooms like the workshop to craft your own items, a botanical garden to grow your own crops, a drone bay to send out mining drones and a landing pad that enables you create automated trade routes to NPC space stations to buy and sell goods!

Exploration

The following update had exploration as a theme, adding mutants as a new playable race that could be unlocked by playing a brand new story line. It was accompanied by new items like the beloved flak armor and grav armor, stimpaks, or medpacks.

New dangerous planets were added as a new hazard for your voyage along with new dungeon rooms that introduced boss fights and destructible terrain.

New buildable colony rooms like chemistry labs, fusion reactors and recruitment beacons offered new ways to enhance your colony.

Combat

The third update not only focused on improving the combat system but it also added a new story line, introduced robots as a playable race and added new enemies like the robotic spider that was even deadlier than its organic counter-part.

You even were able to craft your own robot crew member in the brand-new med lab room which got available for all your colonies. Upgrading weapons was added to customize all your firearms with the latest tech to add armor piercing, bleeding damage and more. New race and class skills expanded the existing RPG system and using it was rewarded with new achievements.

Modding

The game is hopefully fun to everyone. If not, feel free to add your own content by modding it as you like. A new modding API offers you a wide range of customization and ways to add new content.

Full Steam Workshop integration enables you to share your creations with others – or use the creative work of others.

Engine update

Galactic Crew II uses a custom game engine and this update focused on improving the overall quality of features by optimizing game mechanics and overhauling all underlying components such as shaders, renderers, and processing of models. Not only did it improve the visual qualities of the game, it also improved the resource load drastically!

New treasure maps and an improved level editor brought additional content.

Going online!

The last updates all focused on bringing the community together by adding a new persistent universe in which players can trade, help each other and fight for the best highscore.

New weapon and mining turret upgrades were added in addition to new items, new crafting recipes, new planetary content, an all-new skill overview, advanced officer careers and so much more.

When starting a new game, you can customize your game at will. Use any combination of game-altering cards to create a fully customized game. Combine any number of story lines to create a unique campaign. Alter the strengths and weaknesses of you and your enemies. Make missions even more rewarding and add new game content like jump gates or deadly Nemesis ships. Only some cards are unlocked at the beginning, while most cards are unlocked through achievements as you play the game. Mix your cards to get a truly unique experience that will make any run fresh and allow for infinite replay value.

All purchasable spaceships have their own unique layout. You can customize the ship at any space station or shipyard, replacing rooms to change your ship's functionality. Utility improvements can see the addition of crew quarters, engines, and power generators, while combat improvements involve replacing turrets and adding shield generators. Capture enemy spaceships with teleporters, create drones for mining, combat, and salvaging, and create goods with item processors or botanical gardens.
