'Tombwater' Reveals Its In-Game Map With Over a Dozen Biomes - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on July 16, 2025 @ 2:14 p.m. PDT

Tombwater is a 2D Souls-Like action RPG set in a Wild West town plagued by Eldritch monsters haunting the silver mines below.

Unravel the mysteries of the cursed wild-west town of Tombwater. Save what's left of the town without losing your mind amidst the madness.

Enter the haunted town of Tombwater, where shadows roam and whispers echo from deep within the abandoned silver mines. Once a thriving community, now a cursed shell of what was, its people have been haunted by the darkness below. Play as a lone gunslinger, drawn to the eerie, decaying streets by the disappearance of Sheriff Elliott Flintwood—your only friend in a town lost to madness. To uncover the truth, you must face the terrors lurking in the cursed depths and confront what festers in the heart of Tombwater.

Engage in relentless combat against nightmarish foes plagued by an Eldritch curse. Arm yourself with tools of survival: a blood-stained cavalry saber, a shotgun crackling with Eldritch fire, a miner’s pickaxe, and your trusty six-shooter. Gather forbidden spells, tinctures, and charms to fend off the insanity creeping around town.

Venture through the unsettling, labyrinth town, where every step pulls you deeper into a waking nightmare. Embrace Metroidvania-inspired exploration to uncover spectral canyons, haunted woodlands, corrupted forests, and mines tainted by dark rituals. Stray from the familiar path to find hidden enclaves harboring cryptic figures with sinister motives, or face more horrifying foes that guard treasures laced with curses.

Publisher Midwest Games and solo dev Max Mraz unveiled the in-game map for Tombwater.

Showcasing the sheer size of what's to come, the map gives a full scope of nearly 20 distinct biomes that players will progress through in classic Metroidvania fashion. Brace for multiple areas available to explore at any time, others requiring abilities gained, items procured, or bosses defeated.

“We were having so much fun exploring what could be in each area that we didn’t realize how big the map was growing," said Max Mraz, lead developer at Moth Atlas. "We got together one evening to play through the game’s main path — and, six hours later, we weren’t even halfway through! The world map here doesn’t even touch on Tombwater’s various mines, sewers, tunnels, or Lost City deep in the heart of the mountain.”

Interested fans can check out a playable demo that explores the Spanish Fort — an experience that shares only 5% of the title's extensive map.

Detailed Points of Interest

  • Central District includes:

    • Tombwater Station, a historical landmark under the care of Amos Armijo, who somehow maintains a safe haven from the town’s monsters.

    • A traveling circus is in town but beware, there is no shortage of clowns!

    • The Argent Cathedral, a local behemoth offering sacred rituals and a congregation of aggressive acolytes.

  • Thistle Gulch includes:

    • A vast expanse of scrubland before the mesa ruins. The area is dangerously filled with hungry coyotes, oversized spiders, and other indescribable creatures.

    • A gateway to Tombwater Lake, the source of Silverwater rumored to have made the townspeople unnaturally strong.

    • Thistle Ranch, an abandoned homestead, dotted with the bloated remains of cattle and shambling figures picking their way between the carcasses.

    • Its namesake thistles can grow thick and tall. Visitors will need to make sure they have found some way of creating fire to clear a path.

To further illustrate the map's size, Mraz’s posted a direct comparison to one of its biggest inspirations: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. At launch players can expect 20 to 25 hours of gameplay, rife with Eldritch monsters and the secrets they intend to keep buried.

So, pack a canteen and some jerky and prepare to stay awhile!
