20. 'Castlevania DS' (NDS)

by Rainier on Feb. 13, 2005 @ 12:30 a.m. PST

Taking place a year after Aria of Sorrow, the game's protagonist – Soma Cruz – finds himself at the center of a mysterious cult's plan to resurrect their evil lord and master, Dracula. In order to save himself and protect the lives of those he loves, Soma Cruz must infiltrate the enemy's home base, a towering replica of Dracula's castle that is teaming with monstrous creatures. Players' abilities grow and develop as they collect items and gather experience points by defeating enemies.

Tim "Rabbit" Mithee: I don't even own a DS and I'm dying to play this game. Konami may have trouble pulling off a next-generation Castlevania on the consoles, but they've got it down to a science on the portables. Aria of Sorrow was simply perfect, a wonderful homage to Symphony of the Night done for the smaller screen. It's not possible to say just how much I'm looking forward to the continuing adventures of Soma, either -- this will be the first time in ages that a Castlevania cast and setting will last more than one game. Given the open ending of Aria, there's a million directions the tortured Soma and his allies could get dragged through; I imagine all will involve more swords, more huge bosses, and more fear and loathing in other dimensions. Count me in.

Thomas Wilde: I am sworn to follow the Castlevania series wherever it might go, for reasons I don't seem to be able to articulate. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow was the best Castlevania for a while, and Castlevania DS simply takes it to the next level, bringing Soma Cruz back for another go at a castle full of demons, darkness, treasures, secrets, and undeniable weirdness. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first must-have game for the DS.
