One of the few remaining E3 holdouts is id Software, as it first confirmed its attendance, but then retracted the statement. According to
Gamepolitics, the DOOM developer is no longer a member of ESA, making it the third big company to recently leave. Similar to Vivendi/Activision and LucasArts, id Software gave no specifics as to why it decided to leave, but the word is that current ESA President Michael Gallagher is partly to blame, as is a $5 million cancellation fee when E3 moved from LA to Santa Monica last year, which made their ESA membership fee jump from $1 million to $4.5 million.

During QuakeCon, id Software revealed Rage, described as a mixture of 60% shooting and 40% driving. Rage is set in post-apocalyptic wasteland after a meteor hits earth and wipes out civilizations. You are tasked with helping various villages against mutants, monsters and an oppressive regime. As it's part racing, you will of course be able to upgrade and tune your vehicle. While not racing, you'll be able to explore the world, with a 20-hour single-player campaign and co-op.

Computer and video game software sales set a new record in 2004, reaching $7.3 billion, according to final data compiled by the NPD Group. Halo 2, one of the best-selling titles of 2004, took in more revenue in its first day of sales than any movie has ever taken in its opening day. Today Midway Games Inc. released its operating results for the three months ended March 31, 2004 and to avoid boring you with all sort of numbers, the short version of it all is that although they still made a loss, it was much smaller than anticipated, mainly due to strong sales of their recently released action-horror game The Suffering (released for PS2/Xbox on March 8th).
