Don't Second Guess An Operation From An Armchair

by Rainier on July 25, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

It seems that we were not the only ones who liked Captain America: The First Avenger, as Cap unexpectedly kicked Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 off the #1 spot this weekend by making nearly $66 million. Granted, the Potter movie is in its second week, and most people who wanted to see it have already done so, but nobody expected the Captain America movie to perform THIS well. Kudos!

Yesterday was rather uneventful as predicted. We had dinner with friends, and then we watched Falling Skies and Leverage.

Been playing quite a bit of The Witcher 2 and enjoying it a lot, but some of the big fights are frustrating and require a bit of trial and error before you figure out what to do.

Friends Come In And Out Of Our Lives, Like Busboys In A Restaurant.

Yesterday was a perfectly good, lazy day.

All we did was run some errands and grab groceries, plopped ourselves on the couch to watch Torchwood, Burn Notice, Weeds, and finally The Tourist. The last one disappointed a bit with too much talking and a very slow pace. Oh yeah, and we washed all of that down with some ice cream!

Tomorrow we're meeting up with a few friends for an early dinner. Apart from that, we have no plans, so I foresee some more couch time in our future.

Not sure what GamersFirst is up to. There have been some small patches over the past few days, but none seem to fix the (very annoying) lag spikes that have cropped up over the past week or two.

I Was Wonderin' When El Capitan Was Gonna Get A Chance To Use His Popgun

We went to see Captain America: The First Avenger last night, and we loved it! It sure lived up to the hype, which is always a good thing, and it was surprisingly funny, with lots of stuff blowing up, good special effects and even a little romance (just a tad) for the more sentimental viewers. Adam got to see it earlier this week. Read his review if you want more details.

For people who have not yet seen it, stay until after the credits. There is the customary extra footage, but this time it's not just "some" Avengers bit, but an actual teaser trailer that shows Iron Man, Thor, the new Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Cap himself, of course.

Apart from that, not much going on this weekend. Maybe We'll go for a hike, watch some Burn Notice, Rescue Me, or The Tourist, which has been lying around for weeks.

What's Wrong With Celebrating Sobriety By Getting Drunk?

We just came home from the Soundgarden concert, and it was awesome. The opening act, The Mars Volta, was weak sauce and not our cup of tea. (If they're classified as progressive rock, I'll take regressive rock, thank you very much.) The place was packed and temperatures skyrocketed as soon Soundgarden took the stage. They instantly made us forget that they'd split up over a decade ago, with fan favorites like "Black Hole Sun," "Jesus Christ Pose," "Outshined," "Rusty Cage," "Spoonman" and plenty more. Whoever said grunge was dead is sorely mistaken. The thousands of fans in attendance can attest to that!

Tonight, Captain America: The First Avenger !!!

A Lot Of Holes In The Desert, And A Lot Of Problems Are Buried In Those Holes

Two more days of patience, and Captain America: The First Avenger will be upon us! Adam got to see an advance screening today, and while his review is under embargo until later this week, he did let me know "you won't be disappointed." I'm going to hold him to that!

While we're impatiently awaiting Friday, we watched the two-hour season finale of Leverage, and it lived up to expectations as well. Maybe Eliot's slow-mo bullet time segment was a bit over the top, but it sure looked cool, so I'm all for it.

A new patch for APB Reloaded is being rolled out tonight, and hopefully it will resolve the frequent lag spikes that have been occurring over the past week or two. Even though it's only a few seconds every time, it's happening too frequently to dismiss.

I Didn't Always Hate Her. When I Was A Child, I Only Kind Of Disliked Her

It's mid-week, so it's time to get you guys warmed up for our Friday giveaway on Twitter. This time, we'll be giving away a bunch of codes for Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, so if you've wanted to check it out or have the original SSFIV and want the AE DLC, then keep an eye on the official WP Twitter feed.

The new season of Hell's Kitchen started, so since we're foodies, we had to watch that. It's always good entertainment to see Gordon Ramsay go all donkey on his minions.

Mid-week also means that there are only three more days until Captain America (be quiet, Adam!!). This had better be good!

You Know For A Clownfish, He Really Isn't That Funny

As expected, yesterday turned into a lazy Sunday. We ran some errands and planned on watching a whole lot of TV, and we didn't even get around to that. We woke up late, watched women's World Cup soccer — someone needs to teach a few intricacies of defensive play to these women; they had it and gave it away ... twice! — and played Stronghold Kingdoms, APB Reloaded, The Witcher 2, and Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.

Our big movie/DVR afternoon turned out to be weak, as we only managed to watch Burn Notice and half an episode of Leverage before I snoozed off.

From here on out, it's all about counting down to Captain America!

Yesterday was quite a long day. The BBQ breakfast turned out to have more generous portions than we anticipated, so halfway through, we were already getting stuffed, but we endured. We were afraid that the weather wouldn't hold up for the game, but it did, and 7+ hours of baseball later, I'm a slight lobster-ish color even though it wasn't all that hot.

We'll see how I feel/look later today, as a hike might make me spontaneously combust at this point, and nobody wants to see that happen.

We watched Torchwood last night, and depending on our hiking plans, we might sneak in a few episodes of Spooks or even watch "The Tourist."

Oy! Keep Your Fingers Out Of My Soup!

We have a busy week ahead of us, starting today with a double header at the baseball stadium, preceded by a BBQ, probably a hike tomorrow, Soundgarden concert on Thursday, Captain America on Friday, and perhaps another hike after that. Phew, I'm getting tired just thinking about it ...

It seems Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is doing quite well in movie theaters, racking up a whopping $92 million on its first day, dethroning the record previously held by the Twilight series (thank god).

Now off to have some brisket, ribs, tri-tip and sausages for breakfast!

Now that I've finished Red Faction: Armageddon, I'm looking for a new game to pick up and play — you know, in case APB servers are down — and I'm debating between Brink and The Witcher 2. Probably going to check out the former first, since a shooter is most likely to be shorter than an RPG.

Been a fan of Matt Damon for a long time now, so we're looking forward to his new movie, Contagion (by Steven Soderbergh, also starring Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and a few others).

Speaking of movies, nothing to watch this weekend, so I guess Netflix and DVR will have to do.

Happy Friday!

If You Don't Mind Me Saying So, This Conversation Is Getting A Little Strange

by Rainier on July 14, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We finished watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and it was quite good. Looking forward to seeing the conclusion since we never read the books — just too many of them. In the "better late than never" category, we checked out Torchwood, a Dr. Who spin-off, which has just started its fourth season and moved from its original UK setting to the US. It's weird, but we enjoyed our introduction to the series.

Less positive is the fact that Netflix is raising its prices by up to 60%, but they fail to mention that. Instead, they cleverly worded it to say that it gives customers "more options."

In other news, I got three new pairs of socks ....

Get Up Angel, You Look Like A Pekingese

To prepare for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, we started watching the previous movie, sort of our first part of Part 1, so to speak. So far so good, although I needed a little refresher of what had transpired in the last movie to be able to put it all together. We're not going to be in line to see it during opening weekend. We're not THAT big Potter fans, so we'll let the crazies trample each other first, and maybe see it in a week or two after the rabid fans have gone home.

Soundgarden concert next week. haven't seen them in almost 20 years, so I'm pretty stoked.

All I Am Is What I'm Going After

We finally got WorthDownloading back up and running, and we do apologize for the delay. It turns out that somewhere between the last backup and the HD crash, we made a little undocumented tweak. Of course, this made everything go sideways, and it took us longer than it should have to get to the bottom of it. Now that we've sorted that out, we're going to put a new and better server in place shortly and move it over. All sorts of fun stuff!

Adam saw an early screening of the new Harry Potter movie, and we'll have a review by the end of the week. Bottom line, you should get your tickets in advance. It's going to be crazy!

Being Tough Won't Make You Smart

Another relaxing weekend has passed. The weather was great outside, but our planned hike fell through because we got lazy and decided to hunker down and play video games instead. Finished playing LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. Now on to the free play mode to collect and unlock everything, and some more APB Reloaded, which has a stress test before the next big patch.

When we took a break from gaming, we watched some more Leverage and the newest episode of Falling Skies.

Apart from that, we did a whole lot of nothing, and it was great!

The Dead Know Only One Thing: It Is Better To Be Alive

by Rainier on July 10, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

With no movies this weekend, we're saving ourselves for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and mainly Captain America: The First Avenger. We did, however, watch some Burn Notice, and maybe later today a few more episodes of Leverage. All in all, a quiet weekend.

When we weren't doing errands or watching TV, we played LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game and of course APB Reloaded. In the latter's case, I've been quite cranky the past few days due to what I suspect is a sudden influx of hackers. Now, I know when people lose some games, they cry foul, but when people on our team go from winning 7 out of 10 games, to 3 out of 10 overnight, then it's hard to not be a little suspicious. Add to that griefers (people running you off the road with a heavy truck because they are bored) or ghosters (players in a team that did not get pulled into an instance, giving away your position) and things get frustrating very quickly ...

Back from the 1C "Another Night in Moscow" event at the Russian Consulate, where there were copious amounts of food, drink and video games. A little old lady cornered me at the event and started telling me her life story. I must have one of those faces ....

We're taking a break from movies this weekend because nothing interesting is out. We have the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" DVD from Netflix, so we might try to watch that and get caught up in time for "Part 2," which hits theaters next weekend.

We'll be giving away PSN and XBLA codes for Gatling Gears on our Twitter feed today, so follow us for a chance to win!

One God, That I Can Understand; But One Wife? That Is Not Civilized...

We've decided to boycott The Smurfs movie because of Capcom's Smurfs' Village iPod game. Sometime last week, there was an update with the customary fixes and some new content. Ever since the patch, the game crashed multiple times a day. That on its own is not the cause of our malcontent, but yesterday, our save game went corrupt, and our level 35 village turned into a noob level 1, wiping out months of hard work. A quick check on the web revealed that we're not the only ones experiencing this issue, and until this is fixed, we are not seeing The Smurfs movie, even though the two have no ties.

We're just mean like that. :)

Food Is More Important Than Time

by Rainier on July 6, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

This weekend will be slim pickings at the movies. We definitely do NOT want to see Zookeeper, but maybe Horrible Bosses will tide us over until Captain America and The Smurfs!

Kind of a slow day yesterday. Maybe everybody left on summer vacation, so we had a chance to watch Ip Man 2 (the story of Bruce Lee's master), the latest episode of Weeds and Restrepo.

I wasn't interested in any games that shipped this week, and since I finished Red Faction: Armageddon (loved it) I have plenty of time to level up in APB: Reloaded.

All That Is Necessary For The Triumph Of Good Is For Evil Men To Do Nothing

The long weekend is over, and boy, did we eat a lot of ribs! We stopped stuffing ourselves hours ago, and I'm still topped off. Ended the feast with chocolate brownies and some raspberry cheesecake bars. Tasty!

While we were too full to move, we watched the season finale of The Amazing Race and the latest episode of Falling Skies, but earlier in the day, I had finished up The Next Three Days, which was surprisingly better than I'd anticipated.

Off to eat some Rainier cherries ....

It's A Fine Line Between Standing Behind A Principle And Hiding Behind One

by Rainier on July 4, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We're lucky to have somewhat of an extended weekend, as the U.S. is celebrating 4th of July today. BBQ ribs and lots of fireworks are what it's all about.

The weather has been amazing for the past couple of days. It's warm but not sweltering, with a little breeze now and then to cool things off. We went for a hike on Saturday, and while it was equal in distance to last week's warmup, this one felt 10 times tougher.

On Friday night, we went to see The Green Lantern and while it certainly isn't "movie of the year" material, it was quite good.
