To Know Them Means To Eliminate Them

by Rainier on Aug. 19, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Last day of the week, and also last day of GamesCom, which opened to the public yesterday. We don't expect too many more announcements to be made.

We have no special plans this weekend, apart from a pit stop at a tasty BBQ place for dinner, maybe watch The Change-up,  check out a few Netflix movies that are lying around, or if we feel adventurous, maybe a hike.

Our main chore, however, will be catching up on those pesky GamesCom press kits. Joy!

The Failed Mind Sees The Heart's Failings...

by Rainier on Aug. 18, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

There's no denying that GamesCom has kicked off, and there have already been a few interesting announcements. It'll run through the end of the week, so I'm certain there are more goodies to follow, so keep your eyes peeled.

Early reviews for the new Conan movie are quite disappointing, one calling it "a barbaric bore." Guess we're not rushing out to see that one when it comes out this week. Adam got to see Fright Night last night, which also opens this weekend, so we'll have a review on that shortly. Next week we're checking out Warrior, so we'll have some coverage on that.

Also keep an eye out on our WP Twitter feed as Friday we'll be giving away PS3 and PC codes for Call Of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation.

Enough Of Symbolism And These Escapist Themes Of Purity And Innocence

by Rainier on Aug. 16, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Nothing too interesting was going on yesterday. People are probably holding the fireworks until the start of GamesCom later this week. There should be a few interesting announcements coming our way, so we'll dig in and be sure to get you all the latest as it happens ...

Why, oh why, are they planning to remake The Crow!? Nothing will ever match the original Brandon Lee version, and the sequels were outright pathetic.

Wanted to send thanks to our friends over at Del Rey and Tor for providing me us with all the latest novels based on games. Just received the Rage adaptation, but it'll have to wait until I'm done with W.E.B. Griffin and Ted Bell.

Progress Always Comes Late

by Rainier on Aug. 14, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We were in the vicinity of the movie theater today for some errands, so we decided to check out Cowboys & Aliens and see what all the negative fuss was about. While the movie isn't  bad, it's definitely lacking oomph, especially since it features high-caliber actors like Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. There was too much talking and not enough action in the movie. The beginning dragged on too long, with a bunch of gum-flapping and not enough pew-pew.

We also crossed off another chore from the list: washing our car. We've been putting it off for weeks, and the poor thing was getting quite nasty. When we admit it, it's definitely prime time for a scrubbin'.

I Know I'm Awake But It Feels Like I'm In A Dream

by Rainier on Aug. 13, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Oh what a snooze fest that was! Wrapping up a long week with some good sleep always reinvigorates me, and it had to be done last night.

There was a food truck gathering in town last night, so we went out there and got ourselves some tasty grub. We wanted to get some ahi tuna rolls, but the line was so long that by the time we were up, they had just sold out of the item. The person right in front of us snagged the last ones. The nerve!

Today, we'll run some errands, but most of our time will be spent bumming around, watching DVR and playing video games, just the way we like it!

Your Indignation Is Duly Noted; You Can Always Resign Tomorrow

by Rainier on Aug. 12, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

In case you missed it yesterday, Adam spent the day at Eidos Montreal, where he talked to a bunch of the Deus Ex: Human Revolution developers and played the game to his heart's content. Check out his live blog for an overview of his day.

Our ever-growing number of Twitter followers shouldn't feel left out because the weekly Friday giveaway is still going to take place as usual. If you are interested in a free code for Boulder Dash-XL, we're going to be giving away 10 of them, so keep an eye out.

No big plans for this weekend, so we'll probably just relax a bit, play some APB, check out Dawn Of Fantasy, and undoubtedly watch some DVR and Netflix!

Salvation Is A Last-Minute Business

by Rainier on Aug. 11, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Last night, we saw Final Destination 5, and while each movie in the series has the same premise, the gruesome death scenes are what make this franchise worth watching, and the latest installment does not disappoint.

I was more intrigued by the people attending the screening than anything else. In addition to a handful of critics, the theater was filled with regular folks who had been standing in line for hours, just on the off chance of being let in. Two things amazed me: 90% of this crowd was Asian, and some people had the nerve to blatantly remove tags from press-assigned seats and put them in their purses, only to claim ignorance when security asked for their special tickets.

The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow is making a movie  about Navy Seal Team 6's hunt and eventual kill of Osama Bin Laden. Count me in!

If No One Wants It, Why Are We Stealing It?

by Rainier on Aug. 10, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We just came back from a Kalypso press event, where we saw/played Tropico 4, Dungeons: The Dark Lord, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, and Air Conflicts: Secret Wars. We'll have some coverage on those later on, so keep an eye out.

Tonight we're heading out again as we got a nice crispy invite to watch Final Destination 5. Hopefully it'll be the 3D version, with splatter and gore right in your face!

It seems THQ is in some hot water, putting Red Faction and MX vs. ATV on ice and closing studios left and right, while heavily banking on titles like Space Marine and Saints Row. I rather enjoyed the latest Red Faction game, so I'm not sure why it didn't sell as well, but I'm not entirely convinced that those two latter titles will save the day.

No More Shenanigans, No More Tomfoolery, No More Ballyhoo

by Rainier on Aug. 9, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Our wedding anniversary was nice, with good weather and the day off work for the wife. We ran some errands since we were out of town last week, watched The Final Destination just in time to attend the Final Destination 5 advance premiere on Wednesday, and also checked out the latest episodes of Falling Skies.

Been playing some Darkfall, and while the game is quite interesting despite its somewhat dated graphics, it's also pretty brutal, especially when you get ganked by another player and your loot and mount get jacked. That hurts ....

One Life Ends, Another Begins

by Rainier on Aug. 8, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Home Sweet Home!

We made it back safe and sound, although when we were boarding the second leg of the flight, it didn't look like it. All of a sudden, the security people were doing spot-checks at the gate — only looking for a male, it seems — and three agents were scanning the crowd for somebody. It made everybody in line quite uneasy!

Today also marks our ninth wedding anniversary, so props go to my better half for putting up with my antics for all these years, and hopefully many more to follow! :)

You've Kept Him Alive So That He Can Die At The Proper Moment

by Rainier on Aug. 7, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Today is the last day of our little trip, and we're flying back home tonight. The weather has been excellent, hovering around 90°F/30°C most of the time. It's a little humid and some clouds, so the sun wasn't constantly beating down.

Last night, we saw Horrible Bosses, and it was quite good. We were afraid that the best parts had already been shown in the trailer and there wouldn't be anything left to laugh over, but that was clearly not the case. Good stuff ...

No big plans today apart from buying some cheese and visiting a local vineyard, so it should be nice and relaxing.

I Asked For An Army. All I Got Is You

by Rainier on Aug. 6, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

These short vacations are brutal. Too much eating all the time!

Today we saw House on the Rock, which is equally fascinating and impressive as it is disturbing. Built by Alex Jordan, the House on the Rock is quite literally that, a HUGE house on a mountainside with room after room decorated with specific collections ranging from dozens of dollhouses, hundreds of guns, the world's largest indoor carousel and other creepy items (a pickled head, for instance).

Afterward, we had a picnic/BBQ by the lake, which of course had my undivided attention, and then dinner at a local dive bar/fish fry place. We're stuffed...

By the time we got back home, the locusts were out in full force!

What Do You Call It When The Assassins Accuse The Assassin? A Lie

by Rainier on Aug. 5, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Apologies for the missing MOTD yesterday, but after a five-hour flight, and an additional hour delay on a connecting flight, I didn't feel like much updating. Sleep sounded more appealing, especially since we had been up for 24 hours.

We've been musing around for a bit, playing the tourist role, and our dinner was quite disappointing, but today should be much better. There's even talk of a BBQ somewhere down the line!

We've surely been missing out on some of our TV series, but hopefully the DVR has been doing its job, leaving plenty to watch when we fly back home on Sunday.

No time for gaming, so that has been put on hold for a few days as well. Luckily, no withdrawal symptoms yet!

If You Are A Minority Of One, The Truth Is The Truth

by Rainier on Aug. 3, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Going to keep this somewhat short, as we're currently packing our bags for our 6 AM flight. This means that we need to leave the house at around 4, so we decided to pull an all-nighter and sleep on the plane ride, which is approximately 5 hours.

Last night, we quickly watched Just Go with It with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. It was way funnier than we'd anticipated, and it even managed to get our attention away from ogling Brooklyn Decker.

We also checked out some episodes of Leverage (almost caught up), Entourage and Falling Skies. Hey, nothing else was going on while the laundry was being done ....

Like There's Something Wrong With Just Wanting To Have A Good Time?

by Rainier on Aug. 2, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Later this week, we're going on a little trip to visit a few friends, but the trusty laptop is primed and ready, so there will be no slowdown in coverage.

Speaking of trips, next week Adam is going to be some traveling of his own, as he will be visiting Eidos Montreal to get us all the latest details on Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Gaming-wise, it seems to be a bit quiet, probably due to the summer holidays, but I've got my eyes set on Darkfall, Fallen Earth and Earthrise for the time being, so we'll see which one captures my attention.

Can I Transfer To The Class With The Cool Vikings Instead?

by Rainier on Aug. 1, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

To take a break from all the APB Reloaded madness, we've been checking out a few other F2P titles this weekend, such as Combat Arms, and 14-day trials of Earthrise and Darkfall. Later today, GamersFirst plans to relaunch Fallen Earth as free to play, so that's next.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Real Steel are two movies that initially didn't really capture my attention, but as their launch is drawing closer, the new trailers have managed to grab my interest, so they're now high on my to-watch list.

Next week, we're attending the advance screening of Final Destination 5. While we've seen a few of the previous installments, I dropped out after the third movie, so I guess we'll have to brush up on the fourth one before we head out.

There Are Two People Who Know I Didn't Do It. Me And The Guy That Did Do It

by Rainier on July 31, 2011 @ 3:58 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

What's up with these MMO companies that want you to give them your payment information to activate your account when the retail version includes the first month for free? Why would I potentially put myself at risk with my credit card if I don't even know if I want to subscribe? I already paid you for the game, and you gave me a free month to try it out. Why do you want more? Makes me not even bother to try out your game in the first place, I've already tossed aside two games because of that.

We watched the new Harry Potter movie yesterday, and it was quite good. It's nice to see it all getting wrapped up, but personally, I was a bit disappointed in the ending. Had hoped for some more fireworks. What's up with the "19 years later" bit? I see the point that they want to show everything went full circle, and it's in the book and everything, but all I got from it was that they all got fat and ugly.

I Have Not Come For What You Hoped To Do. I've Come For What You Did

by Rainier on July 30, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

There was wine involved last night, so it was lights out shortly thereafter, and I slept like a baby.

We haven't decided which movie to see later tonight, but it's quite surprising that The Smurfs outpaced Cowboys & Aliens so far this weekend, even if it's only by a small margin. You'd figure that Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig (007) have more appeal than a few blue CGI characters, even if they are funny and cute.

To take a break from APB and The Witcher 2, I finally decided to try out Brink, and I'm not liking it at all. I'm not sure if it's me or the game, but I can't figure out for the life of me where and what the next objective is, only to end up losing the match because my AI teammates are no help at all.

Wouldn't It Be Great If I *Was* Crazy? Then The World Would Be Okay

by Rainier on July 29, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Is it just me or is Liam Neeson in every other movie these days? I love how it claims that it's "inspired by the classic game." Really? Apart from the title and some battleships, there's nothing to it. I don't recall there being any hot chicks and make-out scenes or aliens in my board game. Still, I'll go see it, exactly because of the aforementioned elements. They're the perfect ingredients for a good time at the movies.

This weekend, we have a major decision to make, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Cowboys & Aliens, or The Smurfs. Tough call...

I Don't Like Violence. I'm A Businessman; Blood Is A Big Expense

by Rainier on July 28, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

I've flaked on the MOTD for the past couple of days, but I have a legit excuse! I do, really ... I was tired and needed to catch up on my beauty sleep. For the people who've had the misfortune to meet me (all two of them), they know I have a lot of catching up to do.

Later today, we get to meet up with id Software/Bethesda to check out RAGE, play the game, chat with the development team, and maybe a few interviews. Keep an eye out for that coverage somewhere down the line (not sure when the embargo lifts).

In our downtime, we finished Enslaved (good story, frustrating controls), The Witcher 2 (finally in Act 2, loving it) and some APB Reloaded (oddly lag-free for the past two days!).
