by Rainier on Dec. 25, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

The entire WorthPlaying staff would like to say "MERRY CHRISTMAS" to our readers all around the world. We hope everybody has a wonderful holiday, loads of good food, and a joyful time with friends & family. May Santa bring you all the games you wished for, but above all, stay safe!

Each Of Us Has Made It Possible For The Other To Do Terrible Things

With 2012 coming to a close, news will be winding down as we approach the holidays.

Each year we take advantage of the lull to go on a trip for a few weeks and visit relatives, but this year, we are indulging ourselves with a trip to Hawaii as we celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.

The laptop has already been packed, boarding passes printed, and the final load of laundry is being dried.

Just in case those Mayans were right about the world ending and such, we'll have a spectacular view!

More than a decade wait, but it's finally here! No, I'm not talking about that half-assed Duke Nuke game from a few months back, but rather Blizzard's Diablo III!

The launch has been a bit rocky, with the login servers and Battle.net getting hammered by the thousands of players trying to get their game on last night. While it seems a lot of people were having login issues, I did not have much trouble playing it at all. Lucky me ...

Not going to bother with Max Payne 3 just yet. I'll wait until the PC version gets released on May 29.

Dancers, They Are Two Shoes Away From Crazy

by Rainier on April 26, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

I've been playing the Diablo III beta for the past few days. If you had a chance the hop in the open beta last weekend, you'll probably be as excited about the full game as I am. The beta test had some hiccups shortly after launch, but they were resolved rather quickly. I've already played through the content twice, once as the barbarian and once as the demon hunter. While the latter is ranged and, so far, my favorite, he seems a bit underpowered while the barbarian is way more destructive. Next up are the monk, witch doctor and wizard. Got to catch them all!

Thank goodness for the just-released Firefox 12, which fixed a major bug that messed with our CMS editor.

I Don't Mean To Double-Dip In Your Crazy Sauce

by Rainier on April 16, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We had a nice and relaxing weekend with plenty of movies ("Cabin In The Woods" and "In Time") and made a dent in the DVR (2 Broke Girls, Bones, Hawaii Five-0, House, NCIS).

After a little hiatus, I'm finally updating The Old Republic now that Bioware has added (at long last) guild banks, a feature we've been wanting since launch.

Last time I played Firefall, it was a bit boring. Nothing has really changed since the closed beta, so it's hard to keep interested when all you can do is grind the same PvE and PvP content. There are quite a few bugs still remaining, but hopefully those will be squashed soon to smooth out the game experience.

Hope you all had a good tax day!

You Really Knocked The Cork Out Of His Piehole

Having a sick person in the house is never fun, but the show must go on so we will have to deal with the sniffling, snotting and coughing.

The Hunger Games did pretty well last weekend and set a few records here and there. Still stand by my opinion that while the movie is quite good, I don't understand what all the hubbub is about. The concept is nothing new, and the books aren't exactly literary classics. It's good for the people involved; they certainly got their money's worth.

At the end of the week, the Ghost Recon Online beta kicks off phase 2 by adding more people to the beta and hopefully some new content as well.

Woodstock Was A Mud Hole With No Cell Coverage

by Rainier on March 24, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

It's the weekend, and I'm glad it's here.

There isn't anything special going on, so it'll be nice and relaxing. There's only one movie that's worth seeing this weekend — The Hunger Games — and we already saw it earlier this week in an advance premiere. While it's a good action movie, I'm not quite sure what all the fuss is about. It's already broken all sorts of records although it's only been out for 24 hours. It's not like the idea of a televised manhunt is new (The Running Man, Surviving the Game), but this has teenagers beating each other to a bloody pulp instead.

At any rate, later today, the FireFall beta will be up again for a few hours, so it'll be nice to get into that now that phase one of the Ghost Recon Online beta has ended.

I Help The Helpless, I Don't Want To Help The Clueless

by Rainier on March 12, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Here we go for another week.

We had high hopes this weekend to watch a lot of Netflix movies and DVR shows, but it turned into a relay session of taking naps instead. Of course, there was wine involved here and there ..

The Ghost Recon Online beta is quite fun, and while there are only 3-4 maps in rotation for now, none of them is overpowering toward one of the three classes (assault, recon and support). There are tons of unlocks and upgrades, but unfortunately, not too many clan-related features, unless they simply haven't been implemented yet.

I've also been digging into RAGE, and while it's quite fun, it feels very much like Fallout with dune buggies.

I'm In Hawaii, What Do I Need Shoes For?

GDC 2012 is over, and our general impression is that it was rather unimpressive. Not a lot of big reveals or announcements, and not quite as many games being shown off as in prior years. It could be that because E3 has rebounded, the developers/publishers pick that venue to show off their goods and use GDC for its intended purpose: showing off technology to other developers and recruiting fresh blood.

It was good to meet up with people we hadn't seen in a while, but apart from a few select titles, it was pretty much a dud.

While John Carter has been getting positive reviews, we don't plan on seeing it just yet (although Adam saw it a few days ago). Instead, we're going to catch up with shows on the DVR and Netflix movies.

It's Time To Zamboni Off The Loser Ice

GDC is in full swing, and Adam is on the scene checking out all sorts of titles. Check back later this week and next for some some coverage on a bunch of new titles, including Assassin's Creed III, Darksiders II, Mario Tennis and plenty more.

While the Firefall beta only opens twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday), I've been playing some Ghost Recon Online and enjoying that as well. I've been a GR fan since the first game in 2001, and I still think that's the best of them all. I've temporatly put aside Alan Wake for RAGE, and I plan on picking up Mass Effect 3 in the next few days of course (and checking out Chris' upcoming review).

You Start Pretending To Have Fun, You Might Even Have A Little By Accident

by Rainier on March 2, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

This weekend, we have no specific plans, so it'll be a nice and quiet weekend at home, watching some DVR shows and a few Netflix movies we have lying around.

Next week, we'll spend a few days at GDC, check out a few new games, and chat up some developers, so there should be some good stuff being announced/shown.

I've managed to check out a little bit of Alan Wake on PC, and while the graphics are quite nice and the story pretty creepy, I'm most annoyed by the camera angle and the way your character walks. I don't know if it's just me, but the leftward angle of both is bugging the snot out of me.

The Nation Believes That When I Speak, I Speak For Them. But I Can't Speak

The new server is up and running! Many thanks to Ricky for making it once again a smooth transition!

Tonight, we'll watching the Oscars, and in preparation for that, we watched The Help last night, and later today, we'll quickly check out Midnight in Paris. Then we'll have watched most of the Best Motion Picture of the Year nominees.

I played a good few hours of Firefall today and have been enjoying it. The beta obviously has quite a few bugs, but the gameplay is fast and furious. Graphically, I found it to be a bit lacking, but that may just be me. I'm not a fan of the cel-shaded graphics. I'm looking forward to the guild features, grouping up, crafting and more maps, but so far, so good.

You Won't Go To Bed With Any Ugly Girls, But You'll Wake Up With A Bunch

by Rainier on Feb. 24, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

Happy Friday!

Later in the day, you may experience some hiccups where WorthPlaying will not be reachable as we are migrating to a new server. Usually the DNS updating process only takes a few hours to propagate, so hopefully the switching will go smoothly.

We have no specific plans for this weekend, so if you are like us and you weren't planning on it yet, go see Act of Valor. A mix between documentary and a movie, it made me think of Call of Duty the way the different parts of the mission are portrayed, showing their next location on an overhead world view map and pinpointing their next area of operation.

It's Human To Lie. Most Of The Time We Can't Even Be Honest With Ourselves

by Rainier on Feb. 22, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

Last night, we attended the Act Of Valor press screening, and it was awesome! We'll have a review for you later this week, but it exceeded our expectations. I was afraid that it would disappoint (especially after the Red Tails fiasco), but it was great, packed with action, and was even emotionally touching. I had to fight off some tears at the end.

No time for gaming yesterday, but I downloaded and installed the Firefall beta, so I'll give that a try later on.

Remember that Black Ops 2 incident from a few days ago, with the French Web site getting blacklisted? Activision claims it's all a big misunderstanding. Really? Because there was a lot being said there, and it's kind of difficult to misunderstand ALL of that crap in one sitting.

I Don't Think I Will Kiss You, Although You Need Kissing, Badly

by Rainier on Feb. 21, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

Yesterday was quite the slow day, mainly because of Presidents' Day in the U.S., but it should pick up again today.

Unfortunately, I have to a quick visit at the dentist, but hopefully that won't take long. Every second spent in that cursed chair is a second too long.

We watched House, Fringe, The Good Wife, Comic Book Men (Kevin Smith series about his comic book store), Full Metal Jousting (damn, that looks like it hurts), and Two Broke Girls.

Going to give the PC version of Alan Wake a try later today and see what all the hubbub is all about. Maybe I'll even get around to finally checking out RAGE. I downloaded it but never fired it up.

Most importantly, though, tonight is the screening of Act of Valor. It had better not disappoint (*cough*Red Tails*cough*).

Try To Be A Little Less Than Your Frivolous Self, 007

by Rainier on Feb. 20, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

Good progress has been made on the server drama. One of our file servers is operational again, and the new WP server is nearing completion (80% done), so if all goes smoothly, we will be able to flip the switch sometime this week.

We watched the latest episodes of Fringe and The Walking Dead, both quite good. I'm especially happy that the latter show has stuff happening instead of running around in the woods for hours on end like it did earlier in the season. A close-up view of somebody getting his face eaten perks you right up.

I forgot to mention this a few days ago, but our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Insomniac gameplay programmer Michael Kuehl, who passed away last week.

The Fastest Way To Clean Your Gun Is To Shoot A Couple Of People With It

by Rainier on Feb. 19, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

We ended up watching Red Tails yesterday, and while I love war movies, this one is not among my favorites. On the contrary, it's probably going to rank somewhere among the worst. From the start, it was already a hit and miss, as the introduction credits were in red (most likely as a wink to the title), but they totally distracted from the action during the opening sequence. While I'll admit that is nitpicking, the rest of the movie did not fare any better. For its lineup of stars (Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Gerald McRaney, and even Method Man), the acting was weak sauce. What frustrated most of all, however, was the sound quality. The dogfights had no punch, you weren't blown away by explosions, and everything sounded hollow and tinny. When you have some lame music to build up a major air combat scene, you really have to wonder what Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox were thinking.

The Fastest Way To Get Shot Is To Fail To Clean Your Weapon

Interesting story today in regards to the Black Ops 2 fiasco in France. How can a publisher expect to not get pummeled over something like this? Gameblog.fr was only doing its job, reporting news that it had picked up from a legit source, and Activision is in its right to "ask" its contacts to temporarily remove it as it probably messes up PR plans. Once it's out there, though, it's weak sauce to threaten people and boycott them for doing what they are supposed to do.

Not sure which movie we're going to go see today. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance isn't exactly on top of our list, so maybe we'll grab an older one that slipped through the cracks. But next week, Act of Valor!

Life Should Be Lived On The Edge Of Life

by Rainier on Feb. 17, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m. PST | Filed under MOTD

Happy Friday!

It's been a long and busy week filled with server issues and frustration, but in the end, it all worked out. We'll be doing some configuring, transferring and tweaking over the weekend, so one of our file servers should be up and running again shortly. Then we can start worrying about making a smooth  transition to the new and faster WP server.

In between all the cursing, we got some free movie tickets to redeem, so we'll probably watch Underworld: Awakening, Man On A Ledge, Red Tails or Iron Lady.

I'm Hormonal And I've Got A Gun, Don't Mess With Me

Most of our friends know that Wednesday is taco night, and it has been for the past 10+ years. Some friends even magically show up on said day ... very peculiar. Today we mixed it up a bit and instead of our customary ground turkey, we used pulled pork and added pickled red onions. Awesome!

We were supposed to go to an advance screening of Act Of Valor this week, but it was canceled last minute and instead, it will be next week. Making me foam at the mouth for another six days — outrageous!

Also check out this interesting trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. That last scene is wicked!
