Squeal Like A Pig. So, Squeal

by Rainier on Oct. 7, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Adam was lucky enough to have watched Real Steel earlier this week. Since we've been meaning to see it, we're heading out to the theater tonight to check it out.

We've accumulated a nice backlog on the DVR again, so since we have no other specific plans this weekend (aside from lunch with friends on Sunday), we're going to make a dent in that.

Maybe I'll even get to check out Rage. For some reason, it's not showing up in my Steam account! What's up with that?!

Better To Be Judged by Twelve Than Carried By Six

A sad day in history. Apple founder Steve Job passed away yesterday at the age of 56. Having battled pancreatic cancer since 2004, the man who brought us not only the Mac, iPod, iPhone and iPad, but also what many consider the first PC, Apple II, succumbed to his disease. He will be greatly missed!

RIP Steve Jobs (1955-2011).

It's All Life Until You're Dead

The Rage reviews seem to be all over the place, making me want to check it out for myself today. A lot of people don't seem to agree with the high scores, which happen to be from "early" reviews. Makes you wonder ... Sanford is slogging through our copy, probably wrap it up tomorrow, and by that time, I'll be able to pitch in as well. In the meantime, check our interview with id Software president Todd Hollenshead.

Our war in Stronghold Kingdoms is in its third week, and we seem to be gaining the upper hand. We opened a second front, flanking the enemy from the side, which divided its resources and gave us some momentum. This started because one of our allies had been getting railroaded, but with us declaring war on the same house, it took pressure off them and they've regained most of the ground they had lost.

If Nominated I Will Not Run. If Elected I Will Not Serve

The past weekend was quite the cultural outing, with a museum trip on Saturday and The Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary performance on Sunday. It was live at Royal Albert Hall in London, but it was broadcast throughout movie theaters across the world.

We already have our movie for next week picked out, Real Steel (starring Hugh Jackman). The earlier trailers weren't really appealing, but the more recent clips caught our attention. Should be a good time.

Gaming-wise, it should be a good week with RAGE scheduled to launch in a few days, Dark Souls, Just Dance 3, NBA Jam, NBA 2K12, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, among other titles.

Another Life. I Just Have To Shed The Old One And Try Again

Kiss bassist Gene Simmons, 62, has finally said "I do" to his girlfriend of 28 years, Shannon Tweed (54). I guess after dating for almost three decades, they know what they are getting into ...

The new season of Dexter (starring Michael C. Hall) starts tonight, as well as the premiere of Homeland (starring Emmy winner Claire Danes and Damian Lewis), so we'll be checking that out later today. I'm really hoping Homeland turns out to be a success. I've been a fan of Damian Lewis since his role as Major Richard D. Winters in the Band of Brothers miniseries.

If you want to have good laugh, check the Tucker and Dale vs. Evil trailer. Not really suited for kids, though, due to the copious amounts of gore and blood.

I'd Rather Have An Intelligent Enemy Than A Stupid Friend

by Rainier on Oct. 1, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Today will be a bit busy with the first order of business being a very overdue haircut, then groceries followed by a trip to the museum to see the Dutch and Flemish Masterworks from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Collection and The Mourners: Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy exhibits.

Whoever said I wasn't cultured, eh ? :)

It's Dangerous To Confuse Children With Angels

Phew! After yesterday's red ring scare on the Xbox 360, it turns out that it's still functional. It just shut down automatically due to overheating. It is warm out here, and we had been playing Gears of War 3 and LEGO Star Wars III: Clone Wars for quite a bit, so it's understandable. More Gears of War 3 coming up!

Tonight we're going to watch The Debt, which we've been meaning to check out for a while. Figured we'd better hurry up before it disappears from the big screen.

You know what? I totally forgot that I had an early access code to play Battlefield 3, and now it's open beta. Better start the download!

Your Quest Of The Absolute Led You Straight To A Zero

by Rainier on Sept. 29, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Not a happy camper! I finally get around to playing some Gears of War 3, and when I exited the game, our Xbox 360 red rings. It didn't even get back to the dashboard. Boom, it struck in mid-exit! Going to let it cool down a bit, so hopefully it was just a hiccup. We had just finished playing LEGO Star Wars III: Clone Wars, so I guess the Force was not with us anymore ....

The weekend hasn't even begun yet, and it's already looking busy with a haircut, a beer festival and a museum trip. There had better be some time in there to just lie on the couch and eat potato chips, damn it!

On a side note, war is still raging in Stronghold Kingdoms. I've moved my villages to the front line and named it AngelOfDeath. Yeah, I'm sure the enemy is quaking in their boots now!

Life's A Banquet And Most Poor Suckers Are Starving To Death

What's the deal with companies all of a sudden adding a "you can't sue us" clause in their user agreements? Pretty soon, no matter what they sell you — whether or not it's functional, hazardous or illegal — they'll add something in the EULA that safeguards them from any harm. Doesn't really sound right to me. You make something, so you're responsible for it. If it craps out on your watch, well, you should have made it functional in the first place. The next thing you know, we'll be buying cars that fall apart and the manufacturer will make us download a patch to get it running again.

Aside from the legal mumbo jumbo, TV season is in full swing and unfortunately, we've picked up a few new series to test run, like 2 Broke Girls, Person of Interest and, of course, Terra Nova.

God Said You Owed Another Marker. He Came To Collect

by Rainier on Sept. 25, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

On Friday, we finally saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes and everybody really liked it. Nobody is surprised, of course, that the main ape Caesar is played by Andy Serkis, better known as The Lord Of The Rings' Gollum, or for starring in the Enslaved and Heavenly Sword video games.

Yesterday, we pigged out at the "Eat Real" festival downtown, the third year running, where they have dozens of food trucks gathered around offering their delicacies. The weather was not too good, but that worked out because the entire area was packed with thousands of people, so a little breeze now and again felt good without the sun beating down on us.

No plans for today, so we get to just lie around and watch shows on the DVR. Sweet!

Shut Your Mouth Or I'll Kick Your Teeth Down Your Throat And Shut It For You

Kiefer Sutherland of "24" fame is back in the game with a new action/drama series Touch, where a father (Sutherland) discovers his autistic, mute son can predict events before they occur. Created and penned by "Heroes" writer Tim Kring, the new series should premiere early next year and also stars Danny Glover. Could be interesting ...

This weekend, we have no specific plans, so we intend to head to the theater to either check out Contagion, Moneyball or Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but definitely NOT Machine Gun Preacher.

For our weekly Free Code Friday, we are handing out From Dust PSN codes. If you haven't checked it out yet, be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter feed.

I Wish We Had One Of Them Doomsday Machines

by Rainier on Sept. 22, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

I've been struggling with my longtime RSS feed reader. For some reason, it has stopped working and only intermittently gives me updates. It also deleted a bunch of links I had stored up, and it just crapped out on me in general.

Tomorrow is our weekly Free Code Friday, and this time around, we are handing out From Dust PSN codes. If you haven't checked it out yet, be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter feed.

I also wanted to address our Space Marine PS3 review. Having played it through on PC and even jumping into some online games, it baffles me that THQ is not fixing the PS3 version. Its multiplayer has been broken since launch, and we've waited over two weeks to see if there would be a patch to rectify the issue, but alas, it did not arrive by review time. That's why it received such a low score in comparison to the Xbox 360 version.

We Fight. We Try Not To Be Killed, But Sometimes We Are. That's All

by Rainier on Sept. 21, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Finished up Warhammer 10k: Space Marine today, and I thought it was quite enjoyable. Even hopped into some multiplayer matches but got my ass handed to me right away, so looks like I'll have some ranking up to do to unlock some better gear.

Now I can get back to Deus Ex, with more unlocks! I may even get to some Gears of War 3 this weekend — oh wait, it's not on PC! *sarcasm*

We wrapped up the latest season of Hell's Kitchen, and once again our pick did not win. Both finalists were worthy, but we leaned toward the runner-up. At least it wasn't that crying whiny ass b*tch, Elise.

You Weren't Really Shit, But You Weren't All That Great Either. Like Tottenham

by Rainier on Sept. 19, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Damn, that weekend flew by in a split second.

Our shindig on Saturday was a success, even though I wasn't too thrilled about our cooking outcome. Cooking for a large group is always tricky, as we don't really have the equipment to make big batches. It's always trick to keep multiple small portions warm, but our friends were satisfied, and in the end, that's what mattered.

No movies this weekend, but managed to catch up on Sons of Anarchy (damn Jax, grow that hair back! You almost look like Justin Bieber) and a few episodes of Burn Notice. This week, many TV shows are returning this week, so it won't be too long before we have to contend with a 90%-filled DVR again ...

Dice Me, Slice Me, Or Peel Me? There Are So Many Choices

by Rainier on Sept. 16, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We have a busy weekend ahead of us, entertaining some friends for dinner as a return favor for their BBQ a couple of weeks ago. We'll be slaving away in the kitchen quite a bit.

Still haven't decided whether we're gonna watch Contagion, The Debt, or catching up on Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Gaming-wise, played some Space Marine, liked it, and a little bit of Gears of War 3. Things have heated up a little bit in Stronghold Kingdoms as we've declared war on the second biggest house, so we're digging in!

Don't forget to keep an eye out later today for our Street Fighter III: Third Strike - Online Edition (PSN/XBLA) code giveaway on the WorthPlaying Twitter feed.

If He Even Sneezes, We'll Be There With A Hanky And A Pair Of Handcuffs

by Rainier on Sept. 15, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Today, we have some juicy content. There's a fresh Street Fighter III: Third Strike - Online Edition PSN review, which is notable since we'll be giving away codes for it on Friday. Be sure to follow WorthPlaying on Twitter to get the scoop.

And you know an interview with Cliff Bleszinski is always an interesting read, as we grill him on a variety of topics related to the imminent Gears Of War 3 release (look for our review tomorrow).

I'm rather disappointed in the latest box office numbers. Hardly anybody saw Warrior, and that's a shame. While it may not be a deep social commentary like The Help, it's very entertaining. Contagion looks quite interesting as well. Might watch that this weekend as soon as we can scuttle our dinner guests out the door.

I don't know if it's jetlag from our NYC trip or not, but I can't seem to keep my eyes open ...

With People Like Us, We Must Be Able To Travel Faster Than Our Clients

by Rainier on Sept. 13, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

After a lengthy, but smooth, flight, we've arrived home safe and sound from our New York trip. The fun is over, and now it's back to work.

A few interesting observations from NYC: It does indeed never sleep. There's always stuff happening left and right, the street vendor food smells SO good, the subway stations are warm and humid, and while there are less stinky bums lying around, the people in general smell more. We ate so much over the past week, we're on a diet for the rest of the month to make up for it.

Haven't been able to play games all week (the laptop is a dual core but has a crappy video card in it), so I'm itching to play some more Dead Island, Deus Ex and APB Reloaded.

You Don't Know What Fear Is. But You'll See. It's Catching

by Rainier on Sept. 12, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We're about to wrap up our New York trip. Currently packing to catch our flight bright & early in the morning.

Yesterday we watched the U.S. Open women's finale and witnessed Serena Williams lose not only the match but her temper. She took out her subpar tennis out on the umpire by arguing a call, which ended up getting her a penalty and costing her the first set. While Samantha Stosur played good, solid tennis, Serena lost it on her own. My advice to Ms. Williams: less attitude, more tennis.

Now if only Kim Clijsters had been there!

Nobody Asks To Be A Hero. It Just Sometimes Turns Out That Way

by Rainier on Sept. 11, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We certainly didn't plan it this way, but we're in NYC on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. There are numerous memorials throughout the city to commemorate the lives lost on that day. There seems to be a police car on every corner, and firefighters from all over the world are in town for the memorial.

As we were wandering around today, there was a short scare when we looked up and saw that a roof was on fire! Just a transformer fire, it seems ....
