Tomorrow We Go To Meet Our Maker: In My Case God, In Your Case God Knows

by Rainier on Oct. 21, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

How about that shipping day yesterday? With over a dozen new titles in stores, there's got to be something for everybody in there. No question about it — the ramp-up to the holiday season has begun!

I watched Last House of the Left, a remake of Wes Craven's 1972 action/thriller movie. I've never seen the original version, but the remake was a pretty good flick, with quite a few graphic scenes that will make you gasp and cringe.

We also watched the new Heroes episode, and while it may be better than last season, it's still all over the place, as if the writers have no idea in which direction to go. What happened to the NY bomb incident, the original heroes and the old company? There are way too many loose ends scattered about ....

Then there is House, which is always great, but we've been following Hugh Laurie since the late '80s, when he was in Black Adder, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster, and we've even read his book, The Gun Seller.

An Accident? An Accident? Do You Realize It's Snowing In My Room Goddammit!

by Rainier on Oct. 20, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

It's been raining cats and dogs again. I can deal with heat, humidity, cold and snow, but I hate rain.

Yesterday's NPD numbers were interesting; it's not so much a surprise that Halo 3: ODST topped the sales numbers or that PS3 outsold Wii and X360, but rather that The Beatles: Rock Band outsold Guitar Hero 5, even though Activision claimed the franchise has been outselling EA's rhythm series 4-1, also beating analysts' expectations.

Last night, we watched White Noise 2, with our newfound WP hero  Nathan Fillion, and it was quite decent. It hadn't been on our radar at all, but if you like the suspense/thriller genre, it's definitely worth a rental.

Freedom Isn't Free At All. It Comes With The Highest Of Costs: The Cost Of Blood.

by Rainier on Oct. 19, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

It was a nice day out today: sunny, but with a nice breeze to keep everything nice and mellow. Then again, it never gets really cold out here. It can get rainy, but it rarely dips below freezing point, and it never snows. Yet we managed to stay inside most of the day. :)

After we ran a few errands, we saw Zombieland, which was quite funny, with a good dose of head-bashing and blood & guts. Apart from a 10-minute sappy segment in the middle, it was great from start to finish. We were a little skeptical about Law Abiding Citizen because the early reviews were not very favorable, but we ended up having a great time. It even startled us on a few occasions!

Since we had an early start on the day, we still had plenty of time left when we returned from the movies, so we caught up on the remaining episodes of Heroes, Smallville and The Amazing Race. The DVR is all cleaned out, so we're feeling triumphant!

There Is No Right And Wrong, There's Only Fun And Boring

by Rainier on Oct. 18, 2009 @ 7:02 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Yesterday was a bust, again! I was looking forward to our boys-only excursion to the city for beer & BBQ, and while we were supposed to meet at 4pm-ish, I didn't get a call until 8pm and the entire plan changed to dinner and a movie.

Since we were planning to go to the movies on Sunday, I declined and instead we did some chores, groceries, played some Wolfenstein, watched Supernatural, a few episodes of Heroes, and FlashForward.

The plan of attack for today is to do some errands and watch Law Abiding Citizen and Zomebieland. Should be a good time!

The First Girl I Let Into My Life, And She Tries to Eat Me

by Rainier on Oct. 17, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

And ... the weekend has arrived! Anybody else out there likes this part of the week best? :)

After stuffing ourselves with copious amounts of sushi, we plopped ourselves on the couch and watched the latest episodes of Psych and Stargate Universe. We couldn't force ourselves to watch the rest of Next Day Air, knowing we'd fall asleep out of boredom, so we skipped the movie and went straight to the nap instead. Solid plan all around!

Sadly enough, I have to report that tomorrow's scheduled drink-fest and BBQ gorging has been altered and is now just a drink-fest. You'd figure my friends would know by now how much I LOVE BBQ!

In the meantime, my better half will stay home and do chores while the boys and I hit town and turn into children. Sounds fair, right? :)

I Hope We're Still Friends After I Taser You

by Rainier on Oct. 16, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Glad that the week is finally winding down. Yesterday was a pretty good news day, with Sony announcing a 250GB PlayStation 3. We also posted our Dark Void preview based on our hands-on time with the preview build. Definitely excited about that one, since Crimson Skies was one of my favorite Xbox games.

Watched episodes of NCIS, Criminal Minds and Sons of Anarchy, and we got halfway through Next Day Air, a comedy about a parcel delivery driver who mistakenly delivers a very important box to the wrong apartment. Hijinks ensue. I only wanted to see this movie because I like Mos Def's acting, but this was another instance where the trailer made the movie look hilarious. It's pretty mediocre so far, and Donald Faison (from "Scrubs") is definitely wasted here.

You'll Get Rich Here, or You'll Be Killed. Juan De Dios tolls the bell again.

We watched the season finale of Hell's Kitchen, and I must admit that the winner was not our favorite. Dave, "The One-Armed Bandit," sure toughed his way through the season, but Kevin had a higher standard, and while his final service wasn't as smooth as his competitor's, his menu was way more sophisticated and the presentation was excellent. However, since the grand prize is a spot at a bar & grill, the location probably favors the meat dishes more so than Kevin's seafood-focused choices. You donkey!

We have a few more previews & interviews coming up for you this week. We went hands on with our Dark Void build, MX vs. ATV Reflex, and a few upcoming Ubisoft titles.

Taking a break from CrimeCraft, Red Faction and Operation Flashpoint, we decided to change the pace and check out Zuma's Revenge. It's as addictive as ever, and while the game does not differ much from the original, there are new modes, new extras and more ball-busting fun.

He Once Killed A North Korean Agent With A Melon Baller

How about Capcom's Tesla giveaway? That's quite a prize, if you ask me. It's sure worth entering on the off chance you might get lucky.

In case you are totally puzzled by today's quote, it is a line from the latest episode of Castle. It's probably the best in the series yet, full of humor and plot twists.

The heavens opened up big time today, and it has poured most of the day, probably as much in a few hours as it has rained this entire year, and the forecast says it will be like this for a few more days.

We have a pretty busy day ahead of us, as somehow we're going to have to figure out how to attend three press events at the same time. Should be interesting ....

You Think I Like Avoiding My Wife and Kids to Hangout With 19-Year-Old Girls Everyday?

by Rainier on Oct. 13, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Yesterday was Columbus Day, big whoopty doo! I think only the banks and post office were closed, so it wasn't a real holiday around these parts.

While Adam was over at the Capcom event checking out Dark Void and driving high-end Tesla sports cars, we worked, took a nap, ate, watched some more Amazing Race, worked some more, watched Sunshine Cleaners on DVD, ate again, and watched the latest episode of House.

*sarcasm* Yes, what a busy day!

Tomorrow should be a good gaming day. Brutal Legend and Forza 3 are starting off this Rocktober week in style!

I'm Not Supposed to be Within 200 Feet of a School ... or a Chuck E. Cheese

by Rainier on Oct. 12, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

We saw Surrogates today, and while I'm a big Bruce Willis fan, I must admit that this is not his best work. It was just a weak movie with a weak story, and it was also slow on several occasions. If you insist on seeing it, wait for it to be available as a DVD rental. It's definitely not a movie that needs to be seen in the theatre.

Apart from that, we didn't do a whole lot. Watched Smallville, some more The Amazing Race, and checked out Operation Flashpoint 2, which has good graphics and may be easier to get into and has fewer bugs than its rival, Arma II.

There are three press trips lined up for this week, so there's plenty of gaming goodness coming your way. Stay tuned ....

Those That Can't Do, Teach, And Those That Can't Teach ... Teach Gym

by Rainier on Oct. 11, 2009 @ 12:32 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Our trip to the movies to see "Surrogates" has been postponed until tomorrow, which gave us some time to watch stuff on the DVR. We caught up on Supernatural, Flashforward, Bones and The Amazing Race, which is like the old La Chasse au trésor that I used to watch when I was a kid.

Aside from the movie plans, we have nothing else on tomorrow's schedule, so we'll probably do some more watching (a few episodes of Heroes), groceries, laundry and perhaps squeeze in a few games (Republic Heroes and Operation Flashpoint).

I'm Going To Count To Three. There Will Not Be A Four. Give Me The Code.

by Rainier on Oct. 10, 2009 @ 5:35 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Ahh weekend, my favorite time of the week. Time to actually sleep and watch even more TV. We'll probably check out Bruce Willis' "Surrogates," which looks interesting.

This week and next week, quite a few big titles are shipping, and judging from all the press events marked on my calendar it's safe to say that the ramp-up to the holidays has begun, and plenty of titles are coming. Another 4 events this week. Luckily all of them are local, and no, we're not flying out to Italy to check out Assassin's Creed II.

And now for the shameless plug. It was good to hear that Vogster is taking care of business and going to release a limited free-to-play version of CrimeCraft. Love playing the game, but it sure could use some more people in it. While you can trigger PvE instances, the PvP is a big part of the game so new recruits are more than welcome. Hopefully, this will also bring down the prices in the auction house (rare items are being sold for outrageous amounts of money). You all better check it out later this month. You have no excuse not to. :)

You Can't Give The Enemy A Break. Send Him to Hell

by Rainier on Oct. 9, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

No time to watch TV shows today! The time flew by and there are too many things to do, but with the weekend ahead of us, we'll have plenty of time to catch up on recorded stuff.

From what Adam told me, last night's Left 4 Dead 2 event was pretty fun, and in case you haven't checked the Doug Lombardi interview yet, get to it!

We're not sure if it had any effect on the public-facing part of the site, but during the past week or so, we suddenly started having some issues with the CMS. For some reason, the Web server was timing out and not responding anymore. After a few changes that improved things but didn't fix the issue, Ricky decided to use a new, experimental Web server — the same tech that Facebook uses — and not only did it resolve the problem, but the back-end is also noticeably much faster. All hail Ricky!

If You Go Any Faster We're Gonna Travel Back Through Time

by Rainier on Oct. 8, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Today was filled with work as usual but nothing special. Good thing it was nice and sunny out, which made the day go by quickly.

I decided to take a little break from CrimeCraft and play a little Red Faction Guerrilla. Killing EDF and hammering away at buildings is quite fun!

Two press events down, one fell through, and one more Vegas trip to go. We'll have some preview coverage and a bunch of interviews for you shortly, depending on the embargo dates.

Watched the latest episode of "House," which was good stuff. I didn't think Chase had the stones to do what he did. The Aussie wuss surprised!

Guns Are Meant To Be Shot, Not Thrown!

by Rainier on Oct. 7, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Wow, that was quite the shipping day yesterday. Lots of good titles this week. My personal favorites are Op. Flashpoint 2, Demon's Souls and Republic Heroes (something about the art style), but I'm sure there will be a few stragglers later this week as well.

We finished off "Crank 2" today, that movie is so absurd and over the top that it was actually semi-entertaining. It's not as good as the first one, but they sure went all out with the weirdness.

Our DVR had a snafu and for some reason only recorded half of "House" and "NCIS," so we ended up watching the new "Castle," with our personal hero Nathan Fillion! Sunday's episode of "Entourage" was also quite good; the Matt Damon "Jason Bourne" cameo was very entertaining, especially the bit after the credits.

Looks Like I Picked The Wrong Week To Quit Sniffing Glue

by Rainier on Oct. 6, 2009 @ 1:30 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

The count for this week: one press event down, three more to go! Unfortunately, the embargo for last night's event is a ways out, so you'll have to wait a few weeks.

The evening was a bit weird. While we were supposed to run a few errands and do laundry, we decided to have an early dinner, watch "Crank 2," and ... fell asleep mid-way through the movie.

The FTC ruling on blogs (and various other media), the first adjustment in many years, is kind of interesting. Guess the industry playing field will change a little bit come Dec. 1, which can only be a good thing. No more Wild West out there ....

And We Will Send You To Whatever God You Wish

by Rainier on Oct. 5, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT | Filed under MOTD

Yesterday was filled with doing a whole lot of nothing. It was exquisite!

We started off the day at 10ish, went to eat dim sum, after which we sent off Ricky, who's responsible for the new site, to the airport. We then plopped ourselves on the couch and watched a few episodes of "Bones," "Dollhouse," and "Hell's Kitchen." All we did in between was get groceries and nuke some leftovers from last night's trip to The Cheesecake Factory.

I wish I could tell you more, but that's about it. Luckily we have three press trips planned this week, so there should be some interesting stuff coming up.

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned For Sega

Today's King Tut exhibit wasn't all that bad. Lots of interesting stuff to see and read about, but unfortunately Tutankhamun himself was not there. One of the more interesting tidbits was that his sarcophagus itself was enclosed within 8 additional gold-gilded boxes, with each one bigger than the last. Crazy!

While we were there, we also checked out the rest of the museum, and most of it was boring modern art or crappy paintings that I could care less about, but there was one piece, The Spine and Tooth of Santo Guerro, that represented a cathedral entirely built out of disassembled machine gun barrels, handguns, scopes, various bullets and pellets. Wickedly awesome!

When we finally got home, we watched the new Stargate Universe, which, while being a bit confusing at times with the use of flashbacks, is pretty damn good so far. As if two hours of TV weren't good enough, we also snuck in the latest "Supernatural" episode, which never disappoints with the good music, action and sarcastic humor.

He'd Kill Everybody And Smoke Some Cigarettes

Sorry about the late update, but we had some friends over for dinner, and after a long week and tiring week, a nap turned into a full night's sleep. At least our steak and fries were enjoyed by all. :)

We'll have to save some of the news posting for later today because we are going to the museum to check out the King Tut exhibit. Better put on comfy shoes!

Last night was the premiere of the new Stargate Universe series, which we didn't catch because of the dinner party, but hopefully the DVR did its duty so we can check it out tonight. Really looking forward to the series. We love Stargate, so this better not disappoint.

Let's Do Some Gratuitous Violence

Whew! We just walked in the door from the BBQ. The ribs and mashed potatoes with corn and goat cheese were most delicious, and so were the half dozen bottles of wine we consumed.

Friday at last! I sense a weekend full of gaming coming up ... or sleep ... or catching up on TV series. There's plenty to do, it seems.

Played some LEGO Rock Band earlier today, and in line with the previous LEGO games, it is pretty enjoyable and has some depth even though it's intended for a younger target audience.

The PSPgo launched, and while I doubt I'll trade in my regular PSP for the new model, I'm kind of intrigued by all the minis that will be getting released shortly. I enjoy the XBLA and PSN games, so this is the same, only for a handheld system.
