'Abzû' And 'The End Is Nigh' Free On Epic Games Store, 'Conarium' Next Week

by Rainier on Sept. 5, 2019 @ 12:19 p.m. PDT

Abzû is an underwater experience that evokes the dream of diving where you will be immersed in a vibrant ocean world full of mystery and bursting with color and life.

Perform fluid acrobatics as the Diver, using graceful swimming controls. Discover hundreds of unique species based on real creatures and form a powerful connection with the abundant sea life. Interact with schools of thousands of fish that procedurally respond to you, each other, and predators. Linger in epic seascapes and explore aquatic ecosystems modelled with unprecedented detail. Descend into the heart of the ocean where ancient secrets lie forgotten. But beware, dangers lurk in the depths.

ABZÛ is from the oldest mythologies; AB, meaning water, and ZÛ, meaning to know. ABZÛ is the ocean of wisdom.

ABZÛ is not a scuba sim. There are no air gauges or weight belts. Instead, the focus is on the sense of majesty and awe inspired by exploring underwater environments and encountering wildlife. To achieve that, ABZÛ is designed to create a completely fluid experience. There is no fail state that breaks the flow of gameplay. The unique swimming controls are also fluid: we allow the diver to pitch freely in the water, allowing complete freedom of movement.

Once Abzû and The End Is Nigh, the current free games on the Epic Games Store, have run their course, it will be up to Conarium, which will be gratis starting on September 12 until September 19, 2019.

Conarium is a chilling Lovecraftian game, which follows a gripping story involving four scientists and their endeavor to challenge what we normally consider to be the ‘absolute’ limits of nature. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s novella "At the Mountains of Madness", but largely set after the original story.

You, as Frank Gilman, open your eyes inside a room filled with strange, pulsating noises. Patterns of lights executing a Danse Macabre on the walls is projected by a queer device on the table. Having recalled nothing other than that you’re in Upuaut, an Antarctic base located near the South Pole, you find the place deserted and have a distinct feeling of something being terribly wrong. Somehow knowing that your memories cannot guide you enforces a strange feeling of vulnerability, a familiar yet alien sensation of being a part of a peculiar whole... Soon you will discover that having used the device during the expedition, you have died but then returned subtly changed, speaking of strange memories and of strange places. You have lost something important or gained something sinister...

Explore the Antarctic base, as well as dreams and visions. Study clues, unlock secrets but avoid macabre beings at all cost.

Key Features:

  • A deep and suspenseful homage to H. P. Lovecraft with many secrets and Easter eggs.
  • Ominous but wonderful graphics created using the Unreal 4 engine.
  • Multiple endings.
  • A haunting and atmospheric soundtrack.

The world of ABZÛ is populated by tens of thousands of dynamic fish. These fish are all aware of each other and the diver. They follow rules that govern real fish behavior, which causes emergent schooling and darting. ABZÛ also features a food chain simulation with predators eating smaller fish and others grazing on corals and algae. This is all possible due to unique animation and rendering techniques that Giant Squid has developed.

Many games that feature animals offer limited interaction with them, usually "shoot them with a gun for upgrades." ABZÛ captures meaningful and respectful interactions with creatures. The diver can reach out and touch creatures, allowing her to ride and school with them. These mechanics will allow the player to form a more genuine connection with sealife they encounter.

ABZÛ is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC.

The End is Nigh

If you are reading this you are probably dead...

Just kidding, you aren't dead... YET!
See, in the future, everything dies... for the most part.
and this is a game about just that.

The End Is Nigh!

-the management

Features:

  • 600+ levels!
  • 12+ explorable chapters!
  • 20+ collectible and fully playable mini game cartridges! (each with their own tiny achievements!)
  • 100s of collectible little squishy tumors!
  • loads of hidden extras and endings that you will probably see someone else find before you do!
