I've been catching up on the "Reacher" TV series starring Alan Ritchson, so I had "Reacher" on my mind when I sat down to play a few rounds with Arjun at Capcom's office. A new character in the Street Fighter universe, Arjun is basically an Indian version of Reacher. He's big, he hits hard, and he's easy to like.
Capcom limited us to playing Arjun versus Arjun matches (instead of playing versus other characters), but to give you an idea of his relative size, Arjun makes Akuma look small and unimposing.
Despite his size, Arjun feels relatively nimble. He's not going to move around the stage like Cammy or Chun-Li, but he's also not super slow. This helps ensure Arjun is accessible for casual players. There's plenty of nuance to master, you just don't have to be a master to have fun playing as Arjun.
Arjun's super moves are fun to use, in part because they're also fun to watch. For his level one super, he essentially blows air at his opponent really quickly. It's as if the Big Bad Wolf had an air-powered machine gun. Arjun also has a special move that has him blow out a ring of air. That can be used by itself or chained with a shockwave.
Another fun special has Arjun forcing a pillar of rock to rise from the earth. You can time the pillar to disrupt your opponent, or you can use another special to grab the pillar and swing it like a club.
While many of Arjun's attacks cause regular damage, he's also been designed to inflict recoverable damage on his opponent, including when they're blocking. Landing a solid hit before they recover can remove all of that gray health in one fell swoop. Anyone who plays defensively will have to learn to adapt when facing off against an Arjun player.
Because Arjun is a mid-range character, you're encouraged to press the advantage when you have it. Letting your opponent keep their distance puts Arjun at a disadvantage.
Arjun may be new to the Street Fighter universe, but after playing as him for a half-hour, I'm really looking forward to his official release. His pick-up-and-play nature will appeal to casual players. I'm also looking forward to seeing how top-tier players will use Arjun's gray health damage dealing to change up the defensive meta at the tournament level.
