Resident Evil 4 is a remake of the original Resident Evil 4 released in 2005. Reawakened for 2023, Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original while using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics.
Resident Evil 4 revolutionized the Resident Evil franchise with its new third-person-camera game-style that combined action, shooting, and resource management elements, subsequently setting the standard for future Resident Evil titles. This new perspective brought players into the action and horrors encountered by protagonist Leon S. Kennedy during his daring rescue mission.
Resident Evil 4 joins Leon S. Kennedy six years after his hellish experiences in the biological disaster of Raccoon City. His unmatched resolve caused him to be recruited as an agent reporting directly to the president of the United States. With the experience of multiple missions on his back, Leon is dispatched to rescue the president’s recently kidnapped daughter. Leon tracks her to a secluded European village, however after making first contact he discovers a fervor beyond reason grips the local populace.
Capcom revealed Separate Ways, a new story DLC for Resident Evil 4 that is emerging from the shadows on Sept. 21, 2023.
Separate Ways explores another side of the reawakened tale, following Ada Wong on a clandestine mission that reunites the agent with Leon S. Kennedy during his search for the president’s missing daughter. Alongside the release of Separate Ways, a free update for The Mercenaries will go live the same day, introducing Ada Wong and her notorious employer Albert Wesker as playable characters for the popular bonus mode.
The new trailer also debuted thrilling footage of Resident Evil 4 VR Mode. This immersive new way to experience the main campaign of Resident Evil 4 is coming to PlayStation VR2 as free DLC this winter. Resident Evil 4 VR Mode brings the action closer than ever before and dials up the intensity with intuitive PlayStation VR2 Sense controls that include dual wielding, realistic weapon handling, enhanced knife action, and more.
In Separate Ways, Ada Wong travels to a lonely and rural part of Europe to infiltrate a village controlled by the religious group known as Los Iluminados. Under orders from Albert Wesker, Ada is assigned to obtain the cult’s darkest secret: a mysterious material known as “the Amber.” Her operation intertwines with Leon S. Kennedy’s search for the president’s missing daughter, providing an alternate perspective on the main story that uncovers events that unfold behind the scenes.
Alongside the gunplay, combat, and knife mechanics of Resident Evil 4, Separate Ways introduces an additional feature to the experience that takes the fast-paced action to exciting new heights. For this exhilarating mission, Ada is armed with a Grappling Gun that can be used to swing across chasms, make rapid ascents, and plunge into the depths below. She can also wield the device in combat to take on enemies in close quarters and launch into melee takedowns from a distance.
Separate Ways characters
- Ada Wong: The protagonist of Separate Ways. She infiltrates a desolate European village on orders from her employer, Albert Wesker.
- Luis Serra: Ada’s co-conspirator. He’s pledged to help her obtain the Amber.
- Albert Wesker: The mysterious man behind Ada’s mission. It’s his dangerous obsession with the Amber that sends Ada on her most dangerous adventure yet.
- Ada’s grappling gun: In addition to the variety of firearms from the original game and the knife parry that you’re familiar with from Leon’s campaign in RE4, Ada will also wield a grappling gun. This can be used to get to various locations, as well as take down enemies from a distance and launch a ranged melee attack. This makes for a more exciting and fast-paced gameplay experience.
Coinciding with the release of Separate Ways, new playable characters Ada Wong and Albert Wesker join the free DLC, The Mercenaries! This update is available to anyone who owns Resident Evil 4, so make sure you also download the free DLC for The Mercenaries as well. Please look forward to this update.
Separate Ways will be available for $9.99 USD as a downloadable add-on for Resident Evil 4 on Sept. 21 across PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
Enter the immersion of RE4 in VR
Resident Evil 4 is a reimagined version of the original 2005 game, preserving the essence of the game while bringing it to life with state-of-the-art graphics. Now you can immerse yourself in the world of RE4 and enjoy it to the fullest with Resident Evil 4 VR Mode. Using the PlayStation VR2 headset, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the game’s elaborate stages. Discover details of the game that you may not have seen before in areas such as the dark forests, villages filled with the Ganado, and an ancient castle of awe-inspiring beauty. The 3D audio will further enhance your immersion in every area you visit in the game.
How PS VR2 enhances RE4
The development team previously worked on PSVR titles like Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil Village VR Mode. With the knowledge gained from these titles, we are now able to create an even more enhanced VR experience when playing as Leon S. Kennedy.
The game features a wide variety of weapons, and the team focused on adapting them all to VR for an intuitive VR experience. From the way the weapons are held and reloaded, to the easy-to-understand input and haptic feedback of the Sense controllers, players will be able to feel each unique characteristic of the handguns, submachine guns, rifles, knives, and more. Experience immersion and the weapons in the game as if you were actually Leon on his mission of rescue and survival.
RE4 introduced you to the game’s enhanced knife action. Naturally, we took that experience and enhanced it for VR in Resident Evil 4 VR Mode. Swing your knife down at the right time to parry, sneak up on unseen enemies and strike for a sneak takedown, and more. You can also now fight with a knife in both hands.
Boxes and crates containing items can be destroyed in VR using your knife or other weapons, or with a simple one-button command.
Resident Evil 4 VR Mode is planned for release this winter as free DLC exclusively for PlayStation VR2.
Now, this reimagined tale of survival in the face of overwhelming terror returns to deliver a visually stunning modern gaming experience that is true to the promise of the original release. Many team members from the production of 2019’s top-selling and critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 also make their return to delve deeper into the essence of Resident Evil 4.
Fans and newcomers alike can revel in both the new and familiar, as RE Engine heightens the original’s creative direction to tell a story that is darker and even more unsettling.
Resident Evil 4 is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam) at $59.99.
