Expeditions: Samurai is an expansive historical roleplaying game set in Japan during the turbulent years around 1600, where every choice can shape the fate of your crew and the country itself.

Navigate the politics, intrigue, and drama of feudal Japan as you and your crew catch the attention of powerful warlords whose struggle will determine the future of the nation — and eventually become the first European Samurai.

In Expeditions: Samurai, the famous navigator William Adams never makes history as Japan’s first European Samurai, because this time, YOU get there first. Arriving aboard the Dutch frigate "De Albatros" as the newly elected leader of a ragtag crew of privateers, players are drawn into the final chapter of a brutal civil war where every choice can shape the fate of their crew and the future of Japan. With eight companions and eight personal stories to uncover, players can build bonds that grow into friendship, rivalry, or even romance. Every crewmate has their own story to uncover - if you manage to earn their trust.

Combat in Expeditions: Samurai is dynamic. It's fast-paced - and yet still turn-based! Blending simultaneous actions, stealth, gadgets, ambushes, and a broad mix of pirate and Japanese weaponry to an exciting tactical challenge for the players. And for the first time in series history, the adventure can also be played in drop-in/drop-out co-op - because navigating feudal Japanese politics alone is hard enough.

The vessel Albatros has brought your crew to Japan – a land strange to you, full of dangers and challenges, but also the opportunity to meet new allies... and maybe even new friends. If you can earn their trust, that is.

In Expeditions: Samurai, your hero will be a Flynn – but you get to choose his or hers first name, customize its appearance, and pick from one of four classes.

On your journey, you'll meet a colorful cast of eight companions: the skilled burglar Antje, who excels at stealth and has a knack for cracking open doors and locks; Johan, a relative of the late captain and just as arrogant as he is deadly with a sword; Tora-Hime, the Onna-Musha seeking her place in history or Étienne Durand, the priest who serves as the diplomatic superhero of your crew.

Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Campfire Cabal announced that you can start forging these bonds on August 7th, 2026, when Expeditions: Samurai sets sail into Early Access on Steam.

Before launch, developer Campfire Cabal will publish a roadmap detailing what to expect at Early Access launch and which updates are coming down the line.
