France based publisher/developer Monte Cristo, founded in 1995, has been shut down according to online reports. The writing was on the wall when earlier this year it decided to shut down the multiplayer portion of its latest city builder Cities XL due to not enough subscribers/sales. There were plans to transform the game into singleplayer only as Cities XL 2011, but the closure seems to indicate that may not happen, however the developers stated that an unnamed publisher has picked up Cities XL and will continue to be sold.
