A video documentary on the Mass Effect Platinum Hits edition reveals that a kind of casino gaming fight club space station will be added, initially planned to be included in the original game, giving people a much more combat-oriented, lighter-story experience. Also mentioned was the fact that save games from ME will carry over into the sequel, which will in general take you through a darker period where you're really looking for answers with a lot of twists and turns.
