Activision has contracted with Even Balance, Inc. to integrate PunkBuster Anti-Cheat software into the highly anticipated multiplayer component of QUAKE 4, currently being developed by Raven Software and executive produced by id Software. Valve announced today that DoD: Source is nearing completion and will be available before end of the month. An exact release date is not finalized yet, but people will be able to preload the game one week before its official launch. Day of Defeat: Source will be available as an individual purchase via Steam, as well as part of the Counter-Strike: Source retail package that will be available at stores around the same time. Half-Life 2: Silver and Gold package customers will automatically be able to play.

Back in June we reported that the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals would hear oral arguments in the Blizzard v. BnetD case, and now the verdict is in. In a 3-0 decision, the court upheld a trial judge's ruling from October, concluding the programmers' circumvention in this case constitutes infringement. The defendants in the case reverse-engineered the Blizzard protocol using tools to listen to the software's communications with a game server, and circumvent Blizzard's, amongst other things, anti-piracy server Battle.net.
