Yesterday Microsoft's latest financial results revealed that the software giant would be laying off 5,000 people over the next 18 months, starting with 1,400 immediate dismissals. While rumors are that the entertainment division will be hit hard (Zune and Xbox) it has been confirmed that ACES, the internal studio responsible for the long-running Flight Simulator series, will be shut down. However, Microsoft also said that this does not mean the end of the franchise; it will continue, but no specific details were disclosed.

Project Toad will be an add-on to the RACE07/GTR Evo base, similar to what SimBin did with the STCC title. Like STCC, it will improve and enhance the base game as well as iron out the odd bugs still left in the system, add new cars, new tracks and a new level of fun and competitive racing. Acquired by Eidos in 2007, in order to boost its casual mobile gaming market share, Rockpool Games employees have been made redundant and the Manchester development studio has been shut down according to Bill Harbison, a former employee. Eidos has now confirmed the closure blaming the "incredibly challenging and competitive times" so it can keep its costs under control. Earlier this year Eidos had already laid off a number of Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) employees, and last year shut down Pivotal.
