NVIDIA Enlists in 'America's Army'

by Thomas on July 3, 2002 @ 10:06 a.m. PDT

America's Army is a realistic computer game providing civilians with an inside perspective and a virtual role in today's premiere land force, the U.S. Army. America's Army players will experience soldiering in a state-of-the-art new manner. The America's Army game blends two vivid simulations: Soldiers, a role-playing portion in which players navigate life's challenges to achieve goals, and a first-person action game, called Operations.

NVIDIA also announced that it will aid the U.S. Army in the deployment of the "America's Army" to the masses by offering it as a free download on www.nvidia.com, beginning with a special "Recon" version available on July 4 at 12:01 a.m., followed by a full version later this summer. NVIDIA is also working with its retail add-in card partners to distribute the full CD version of "America's Army" with the NVIDIA GeForce4(TM) family of GPUs.

"America's Army marks an achievement in gaming and we're proud to have had the opportunity to work closely with the U.S. Army to put gamers on the front line of a compelling gaming experience," said Dan Vivoli, chief marketing commander at NVIDIA. "Our GPUs provide the technological foundation for delivering the America's Army experience the way it's meant to be played."

Optimized for GeForce2(TM) GPUs and above, "America's Army" delivers a true-to-life experience of military training and combat. Throughout the game's development process, NVIDIA's special ops team worked with the U.S. Army to initiate and enable special 3D effects and imagery made possible only on NVIDIA GPUs. The result is a 3D virtual soldier experience that's the next best thing to enlisting.

"When we began developing America's Army we wanted to push 3D realism beyond the state of the art. By pegging the game's baseline GPU requirement to NVIDIA's GeForce2 card we achieved outstanding results that deliver an impressive, true-to-life experience," said LTC Casey Wardynski, project originator and manager of the "America's Army" game. "Consequently, our decision to rely upon this NVIDIA standard to optimize our game was one of the most important decisions that we made."
