About Tony "OUberLord" Mitera

I've been entrenched in the world of game reviews for almost a decade, and I've been playing them for even longer. I'm primarily a PC gamer, though I own and play pretty much all modern platforms. When I'm not shooting up the place in the online arena, I can be found working in the IT field, which has just as many computers but far less shooting. Usually.

GBA Preview - 'Daredevil'

by Tony "OUberLord" Mitera on Jan. 15, 2003 @ 12:11 a.m. PST

Genre: Beat-Em-Up
Publisher: Encore Software
Developer: Griptonite Games
Release Date: 2-13-2003

With the movie release of Spider-Man last summer, the subsequent games based on the well-performing movie, and other superhero-related movies and games coming up, it seems superheroes are having a bit of a comeback. The latest superhero to get a movie and game is DareDevil, a blind lawyer by day, superhero by night. While DareDevil aka Mike Murdock is completely blind, his other senses operate at a superhuman level, giving him great advantages over criminals despite his lack of sight. The upcoming DareDevil movie is to be released on the 13th of February, with the GBA game coming out on the same day. The movie will more than likely be of high quality as anyone who has seen the trailer can tell you, but what about the game? DareDevil is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes down to it. Although the preview build still has a tiny bit of time to undergo some tweaking before its release date, it may not be enough.

The plotline of the game closely follows that of the movie. During the gameplay, the plot unfolds as DareDevil makes his way through Hell’s Kitchen fighting various enemies including Elektra, Bullseye, and Kingpin. The plot is mainly developed using stills taken from the movie and snippets of text, which works well for a movie-to-game conversion.

Control and gameplay in DareDevil are a bit shoddy. At the present time the gameplay gets a bit repetitive and the amount of things you can do in terms of attacking the various enemies you meet is a fairly small number. The graphics in the game are decent overall; the characters all have a good amount of frames per animation and move fluidly. The sound is also decent, with melodic and un-intrusive music combined with a good array of sound effects.

Look for a full review of DareDevil closer to its release date.
