'Streets of Rage 4' Gets Mr. X Nightmare DLC Date, More Survival Mode Details - Trailer

by Rainier on July 1, 2021 @ 1:19 p.m. PDT

Streets of Rage 4 is an all-new continuation of SEGA's iconic arcade brawler series known for its radical fights, jammin’ ‘90s beats and dashing sparring gloves and bandanas.

Featuring hand-drawn visuals from the team behind 2017’s gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem.

Streets of Rage 4 recalls classic gameplay but it stands as an entirely original arcade-style romp thanks to the expertise of Guard Crush Games and Dotemu.

Whether players gang up with a friend or clean up the city solo, Streets of Rage 4 is a skull-bashing, chicken-chomping delight all set to a thumping soundtrack sure to get your blood pumping.

Streets of Rage 4 is the first installment to the mainline series in more than two decades and will revitalize the iconic baddie-bashing gameplay with modern touches, fresh pulsing jams, and more surprises to be revealed. The team behind Streets of Rage 4 is drawing from a lifetime of love for brawlers to introduce new fans and remind veterans alike why Streets of Rage is one of SEGA’s most beloved series.

Dotemu with co-developers Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games announce that the Mr. X Nightmare DLC for Streets of Rage 4 is launching July 15 for $7.99 on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, GOG, and the Windows Store.

The announcement brings first details for Mr. X Nightmare’s Survival mode, an inventive, immensely replayable challenge for Streets of Rage 4’s most versatile brawlers. Fighters beat down endless waves of foes and earn perks for as long as they can stay alive across two session variations: Random, which keeps each fight unpredictable through generated runs; and Weekly, a series of static gauntlets generated each week.

Each completed level offers two randomized perks to choose from, granting stackable bonuses to power up combatants in unique and devastating ways until they’re defeated. Braving Survival’s onslaughts also permanently unlocks new moves for use across any of Streets of Rage 4’s modes, allowing players to personalize movelists for their favorite characters. Progress unlocks devastating new weapons within both Survival mode and an incoming training mode, as well as gallery content. The mode’s leaderboards keep track of the community’s well-fought runs too; who will be Wood Oak City’s finest fighter?

Mr. X Nightmare bundles the above with the playable debut of Estel Aguirre, fully realized playable versions of Max Thunder and Shiva, and grooving original music from Tee Lopes (Sonic Mania, League of Legends).

A separate free update adding an in-depth training system, color palette options, a fiendish New Mania+ difficulty, plus a wealth of refinements and balancing changes addressing feedback from Streets of Rage 4’s passionate community, also arrives on July 15.

A new physical version of Streets of Rage 4 with all Mr. X Nightmare content included on the cartridge is also available for pre-order starting today courtesy of Merge Games. This edition launches on Sept. 28.

Streets of Rage 4 reunites Axel, Blaze, and Adam for the first mainline Streets of Rage game in more than 25 years. The highly anticipated sequel embodies the classic trilogy’s gritty, neon-streaked urban atmosphere in a fully original experience boasting a strikingly fluid hand-drawn art style. New skull-cracking playable characters, expanded combat abilities, and a pulsing soundtrack from an all-star lineup including series composers Yūzō Koshiro (Streets of Rage 1, 2, & 3, Sonic the Hedgehog) and Motohiro Kawashima (Streets of Rage 2 & 3, Shinobi II) make Streets of Rage 4 an all-out brawl of a lifetime.

Streets of Rage 4 is available as digital download on PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One as well as Xbox Game Pass for $24.99.
