'Crowfall' Servers Going Offline Later This Month While Development Team 'Rethinks' The Future Of The Game

by Rainier on Nov. 7, 2022 @ 2:23 p.m. PST

Crowfall is a next-generation massively multiplayer online game with a focus on political alliances and feudal conquest.

Crowfall is a seamless blend of an MMO with a large-scale Strategy game, where players control the universe, to shape as they see fit. Characters are persistent, but the campaign worlds are not. players are Immortal Champions, traveling between realms to fight in an eternal War of the Gods.

Each Campaign World is a server or "realm".  It exists for a limited time – typically 1 to 3 months -- or until some win condition is met. During this time, the World will change.  Each Campaign has four stages: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. With each passing season, the World grows more deadly as the land is consumed by an unstoppable legion of undead -- The Hunger.

At the end of Winter, the Campaign is over. A victor is declared, the map is wiped and that World goes offline forever...  ...but the characters are NEVER wiped.  Instead, the participants take their winnings back home to the Eternal Kingdoms, to prepare and strategize for the next Campaign.

Crowfall breaks from the tradition of locking characters into a static, never-changing “realm” or “server,” allowing players to move freely between worlds—with each world offering a unique experience—different maps, different politics and different rules. These diverse worlds include The Dregs (massive Throne War campaign with forts, keeps and castles that support 100v100 sieges, God’s Reach (perpetual 3-faction battleground servers), the HungerDome (a 12 team, 60 player battle arena) and the Eternal Kingdoms (player-built worlds that offer guilds and monarchs the ability to terraform the terrain and construct spawning cities and massive strongholds).

Across all of the worlds in Crowfall, one key factor differentiates Crowfall: player agency. Crowfall is a dynamic universe, where players control the direction of the game: cities will rise, castles will fall. Recruit an army and lay siege to your enemies. Hire an assassin to turn the tide of a campaign.  Form a band of mercenaries to raid your neighbor’s stronghold. The fate of the Dying Worlds will be determined by player decisions, choices that will reshape the battle and change the shape of this world, forever.

In Dec. 2021 Monumental acquired Crowfall from ArtCraft Entertainment, but less than a year later the developers want to bring down the game to "rethink" the future of the game.

Hello Crows!

Over the past few months, we’ve been evaluating the current state of Crowfall. One of the biggest challenges has been the sheer amount of development effort required to build new campaigns and keep the game running daily. In order to refocus our efforts from live operations to development, we have decided to take the Crowfall live service offline for the time being.

On November 22, 2022, at 11 AM CST, Crowfall will go dark, and the game servers will be unavailable. Until the service goes offline, take this time to try out all of the cool buildings, mounts, and emotes for free in the Crowfall store.

We're going to use this time to map out the future of the game. We have yet to determine what that looks like, but we are investing in and rethinking every part of the game - from the core technology and tools to art, design, and gameplay. Nothing is off the table.

We'll share the plan with the community as it shapes up.

Starting today, the following will go into effect:

Customer Service

  • Customer service will be limited to account recovery assistance until the server goes dark; Rules of Conduct, and Terms and Conditions violations.
  • Customer service will also be available for Zone and EK restarts
  • Customer service will only be available from Monday to Friday during business hours ( 9 am CST to 5 PM CST
  • Refunds will be automatically given for any purchases made 90 days before today

VIP

  • All players with accounts in good standing will receive a  new “free VIP.” Much like our typical VIP, this new VIP removes the Crowns and monthly rewards but provides you with all the typical VIP goodies.

Other

Other services that we once offered will be unavailable starting today. Some of these are listed below:

  • Buddy Recruits
  • Refer a friend
  • Downloading the game

We want to thank Crowfall players for their support, feedback, and patience since Monumental purchased the game.

The Crowfall Team

The Worlds are made of voxels (like Minecraft, only much less blocky) – which means the entire World is destructible. Crowfall's campaign maps are procedurally generated -- meaning that the process of creating every mountain, forest, river, castle and abandoned village is automated.  Each World is different, which means that the game of territorial conquest will be different in every Campaign.

The beginning of each Campaign is like the first round of Civilization: players are dropped into a harsh environment, surrounded by Fog-of-War. The Worlds are filled with deadly monsters, haunted ruins, abandoned quarries... and the most dangerous predator of all, other players. Craft weapons, scavenge armor, secure a stronghold, forge alliances and conquer the World.

There are two types of Worlds in the Crowfall universe: the Campaign Worlds, which produce materials (stone, iron and wood) and the Eternal Kingdoms, which are barren of resources -- but last forever. If each Campaign is like a soccer match, the Eternal Kingdoms encompass the entire season!  Unlike the Campaigns, these Worlds are permanent -- and they are completely managed and owned by the players.

Players act as rulers -- they can divide up their domains into provinces and grant those lands to other players.  Benevolent monarch or iron-fisted tyrant, what kind of kingdom will you rule?

The Eternal Kingdom can be massive -- with mountains and rivers, castles and villages, dungeons and ruins.  They are also devoid of resources: stone, iron and wood.  To gain the resources necessary to build structures and craft items, players will have to participate in Campaigns... or treat with those who do.

Crowfall is currently available for PC.
