Switch/PC Preview - 'Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak' Flaming Espinas DLC

by Adam Pavlacka on Sept. 23, 2022 @ 11:40 a.m. PDT

In Monster Hunter Rise, players rise above the world, using special creatures to scale cliffs and vault high above the magnificent terrain around them.

The second title update for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is set to drop at the end of this month. One of the highlights is the Flaming Espinas fight, which Capcom had available to play as part of its TGS preview content. Franchise fans will recall the Flaming Espinas from Monster Hunter Frontier.

Jumping into the demo, our group was given 15 minutes to take down the monster. Despite our valiant efforts (and an assist from Capcom demoists), we were ultimately unsuccessful. That said, we did last long enough to see a few different phases in the Flaming Espinas attacks. There is one fairly devastating area-of-effect attack that can potentially wipe out the entire party if you're not careful.

If I took anything away from the fight, it's that the latest additions keep up the challenge that Monster Hunter Rise is known for. Taking down the Flaming Espinas is doable, but it requires skill, timing, and experience. Knowing what to look for and striking when it is vulnerable is going to be key to a successful battle.

Watch our attempt at taking down the Flaming Espinas below.
