'Ion Fury: Aftershock' Expansion Pack Surprise Launches Next Week - Trailer

by Judy on Sept. 30, 2023 @ 2:40 p.m. PDT

Ion Fury is an old-school hand-crafted pixelated first-person shooter powered by 3D Realms' Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior and other 90's hits.

Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it's time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There's also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Maiden should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly's quest to take down Dr. Heskel's army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn't mean there won't be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They've spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Developer Voidpoint and publisher 3D Realms revealed that Ion Fury: Aftershock launches on PC (Steam) on October 2, 2023 for $14.99 USD.

After the events of Ion Fury, no one deserves a drink more than Shelly Harrison. But when explosions interrupt her time at a local bar, Shelly is pissed off and immediately readies up. Within moments, the fiendish Dr. Hesksel returns to attack NEO DC and Shelly, armed with a bag of guns and a Roadripper quad hover bike donning homing cannons, sets out to defeat the doc once and for all.

A massive expansion featuring more than half of the content included in the original game, Ion Fury: Aftershock doubles down on the old-school FPS action with challenging new bosses, a wealth of powerups and secrets to uncover, and an expanded arsenal introducing three new weapons.

Test Shelly’s newest guns against variants of familiar Ion Fury foes. Fire the Cluster Shot into charging Kamikaze Mechsects, unleashing bouncing pellets to rip them apart as they explode. Lob Gas Grenades toward Cultists to choke them with noxious fumes before they can fire flaming bullets at Shelly. Seek out game-changing powerups like Agility Surge to slow down time and line up shots as Shelly fights her way across each stage.

Blast through enemies on the streets of NEO DC, rip across the countryside on the Roadripper, and prepare for a showdown on a massive volcano that threatens to erupt in a high-octane campaign, all amped up to an Industrial EDM-inspired soundtrack.

Aftershock encourages various playstyles, inviting hardcore fans to challenge themselves with the latest ultra hard difficulty level. Arrange Mode offers the opportunity to experience Ion Fury with a new coat of paint, incorporating remixed enemies, weapons and more. Set the world ablaze, and lead Shelly to triumph against Dr. Heskel once more.

“We’re thrilled to share Shelly’s next adventure with the world, and are thankful for the patience of our dedicated fans,” said Frederik Schreiber, CEO of 3D Realms. “We look forward to witnessing fans dive into this heart-pumping journey and see Shelly’s mission to the end!”
