An article on the
Japanese Sankei website has a quote from an unnamed Sony spokesperson that possible problems with the mass production of the Blu-ray drive could delay the PS3 launch. "The highest quality picture is vital to the PS3. There is a possibility of delay if delivery of parts is delayed." If that delay occurs, the new launch would happen in October, to take advantage of the holiday season. Delay rumors have been rampant since Wall Street stock-brokerage firm Merrill Lynch speculated the new console wouldn't launch before the end of the year.

Sony still has not revised its April 2006 PS3 launch date, but
analysts are starting to doubt the next-gen console will make it, saying instead that a late 2006 release would be more likely. Analysts point to the fact that the PS3 was not present at CES, only a few thousand dev kits have been sent out, next-gen titles normally take about 18 months to develop, and complexities of mass producing the PS3's high-tech Cell chip. Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson predicts the PS3 may only be available in very small quantities, 1 million for Japan, and another million for North America, with Europe possibly not seeing any units until March 2007.

With the announcement that Final Fantasy XIII will be coming to the Xbox 360 in addition to the PS3, things are looking kind of grim for Sony in one of the areas where they used to be the undefeated champ: role-playing games. With titles like Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4 and now Final Fantasy XIII coming to Microsoft's system, in addition to support from niche companies like Atlus, Sony's lost a lot of its normally unbreakable hold over the RPG gamer market. Yet for all of that,
