The Japanese unit of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it has appointed Yoshihiro Murayama as general manager of the unit's Xbox division. The hire of the game-industry veteran signifies the company's commitment to catching up with industry rival Sony Corp. and its popular PlayStation 2 game console. He begins his new role on Oct. 1.

Fueled by a highly touted lineup of new game titles and the growing popularity of its unified online gaming service, Microsoft Xbox is outpacing the industry as the only next-generation console to continuously demonstrate positive market share growth on a year-over-year basis (August 2002 to August 2003). According to NPD Group Inc., (NPD Funworld TRSTS, August 2003), sales of the Xbox console increased 6 percent from this same period last year, while the Sony's PlayStation 2 dropped 36 percent and Nintendo's GameCube fell 22 percent. Xbox now captures 27 percent of the United States industry market share for next-generation consoles and is on track to capture additional market share this holiday season.

Namco Hometek Inc. announced today that it has expanded its relationship with Hip Interactive Corp to license several of Namco's key video-game properties for the PC. Hip Interactive will develop and distribute PC versions of "kill.switch," "Extreme Force: Grant City Anti-Crime" (working title) and "PAC-MAN WORLD 2" in North America and Europe in 2004. As previously announced, Hip Interactive will be releasing another top Namco franchise, "Dead to Rights" for PC in North America and Europe in fall 2003.

Sports Interactive and Eidos today announce that they have mutually decided to end their longstanding relationship in relation to the development of the Championship Manager series of computer games. The two companies will work together on Championship Manager: Season 03/04, which will be the last game in the series to be developed by Sports Interactive. The game will be released by Eidos in the fourth quarter of this calendar year.

Take-Two Interactive Software and TDK Mediactive announced an agreement today pursuant to which Take-Two will acquire all shares of outstanding common stock of TDK Mediactive. Under the terms of the agreement, Take-Two will purchase TDK Mediactive for approximately $22.7 million, consisting of (1) $0.55 per share for each of the 23,005,885 shares outstanding (approximately $12.6 million); (2) purchase of debt of approximately $9.9 million ($1.9 million in cash and $8 million in restricted shares of common stock of Take-Two, or approximately 270,000 shares); and (3) approximately $0.2 million to retire outstanding stock options.
