Walking With Beasts 'Operation Salvage' - Facts

by Rainier on Oct. 5, 2001 @ 8:28 p.m. PDT

The year is 2050. The place is Washington. At the World Wildlife Bionetwork, panic has broken out over the mysterious disappearance of a female agent now deemed to be acting for an unscrupulous organisation. You are the only person trained to carry out the mission that is crucial to the future survival of the planet. Your mission is Operation Salvage.
Set in the world of the bloodthirsty pre-historic beasts explored in the forthcoming BBC television series Walking With Beasts, Operation Salvage is a strategy PC game spanning 65 million years. Using this setting - with scores of previously unseen beasts dating from the time of the demise of the great dinosaurs - the title uses the drama of the television series as a terrifying backdrop to the fate which has befallen the doomed planet Earth.

The mission has already suffered a huge setback with the suspicious disappearance of an agent, now thought to be rogue. It is suspected that the missing agent, suffering a psychosis brought upon by the effects of travelling back in time, has booby-trapped key areas in the ancient landscape.

Using an Explorer - equipped to the player's specifications - to travel 65 million years back in time, the player's task is to retrieve footage and log data on the beasts and landscape of the pre-historic period for a special archive being compiled by the World Wildlife Bionetwork. The player receives mission briefings and online intelligence from the WWB's Director, on the current actions of the rogue agent and the plot unfolds...

Using logic, stealth and tactics to locate and collect the information needed, the player must not only avoid the traps left by the rogue agent but also watch out for the treacherous beasts…disturbing them at their own peril!

"This era offers tremendous scope for an strategy game" says Product Development Director at BBC Multimedia, Sarah Hennings. "Set in a time in which beasts such as the ferocious, pig-like Entelodont, fierce dog-like Hyaenadon and sabre toothed tigers ruled the land and moving on through the ice age when man and mammoth triumphed, the setting offers elements that transfer excellently to the PC. Walking With Beasts is one of the most fascinating animation and visual effects projects ever undertaken by the BBC for a television show. BBC Multimedia wants to take this experience a step further into the realm of gaming with Operation Salvage, allowing players to become truly involved in this electrifying era."
