DreamWorks and Tecmo Announce 'Fatal Frame' Movie

by Rainier on Oct. 1, 2003 @ 12:17 p.m. PDT

A new title in the Fatal Frame franchise, known in Europe as Project Zero, is under development specifically for the Wii by Grasshopper, known for the recent No More Heroes, and once again produced by Keisuke Kikuchi.

New details emerged at the 2003 Tokyo Game Show, when it was announced that writer/producer John Rogers has signed on to head up the movie project as its producer. Bringing the series to the big screen is a priority for the studio, with Spielberg himself having a first-hand role in the project. DreamWorks confirmed its commitment by announcing that they were fast-tracking the movie and working on finalizing the script -- a director will be named shortly, and casting will begin soon after.

Rogers, who in the past has worked on such projects as the science fiction thriller, "The Core," and is currently working on the highly-anticipated "Catwoman," starring Halle Berry and Sharon Stone, is thrilled to be on board with the project. He was attracted to the production after hearing that the film would stay true to its original theme by keeping the storyline set in Japan.

"I was attracted to the idea of doing a classic, old school haunted house picture," Rogers said. "By focusing, too, on cool Japanese cultural additions and different ghost `mythos' most North American audiences are unfamiliar with, we can do something unique. None of the rules about the supernatural, the characters, or our audience apply in the Fatal Frame world."

About Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is the sequel to one of the scariest horror games of all time. Its storyline follows the haunting tale of twin sisters trapped in an abandoned village and forced to deal with spirits of a once sacred, now demonic ritual. The psychological thriller features a unique camera-combat system that can now be upgraded, a more disturbing atmosphere and setting, and a terrifying assembly of ghoulish apparitions.
