'Age of Empires Online' Development Ceasing, No More New Content

by Rainier on Jan. 4, 2013 @ 10:30 a.m. PST

Age of Empires Online invites players to create a living, growing online world, shared with friends and friendly rivals around the globe.

Begin the journey with your own Greek civilization, and watch as it progresses from a village to an empire. Embark on quests along the way, alone or with friends, and immerse yourself in epic tales, quirky characters, adventure, history and strategy. Together with the Games for Windows – LIVE service, “Age of Empires Online” delivers a rich, social experience that lets you play however you want — anywhere, anytime.

Marrying fresh features with iconic gameplay, “Age of Empires Online” offers something for long-time fans, newcomers and everyone in between.

GasPowered Games has made the following statement:

There will be no new content created for Age of Empires Online. There is a small amount of content still in the pipeline that will be released in the next few weeks, but that is all. No new features will be added. Most significantly, no new civilizations will be released; the six existing ones are the complete and final set.

However, nothing else changes for players, nothing that currently exists will be removed. You can still play everything you own, earn EP, and purchase any content you do not currently own. We will still fully maintain and support the game and its players; no one is losing anything that you have earned or bought. Our Community team will continue to support the game by way of Community Challenges, streams, contests, PvP tournaments and more.

Creating top-tier content, as we have been for the last year and a half, is very expensive—too expensive to maintain for long, as it turns out. GPG can no longer afford to keep creating it. AOEO already has a very large amount of high-quality, hand-crafted entertainment, and adding more is no longer cost-effective.

Over the past year specifically GPG have made a significant amount of changes to the service, including highly complex changes like altering the business model entirely, while still adding a steady stream of high-quality content to the game itself. Age of Empires Online has come a long way since August 2011. But now we have finished building the world of AOEO.

We hope that you will join us in playing there for a long time to come.
