A founding team of games industry veterans, having worked on iconic titles such as EVE Online, Alan Wake and The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land, has launched Mainframe Industries, with studios in Helsinki and Reykjavik.

Backed by a two million EUR seed round from leading early stage tech and gaming investors, including Maki.vc, Play Ventures, Crowberry Capital and Sisu Game Ventures, the developer aims to create the first open world, social sandbox MMO built from the ground up for cloud gaming.

“The creative and business opportunities that cloud gaming brings to social and immersive online games is says Mainframe co-founder and CEO Thor Gunnarsson. “We’re incredibly excited to announce our air-bridge across the Nordics, having assembled a founding team with the AAA, MMO and mobile pedigrees needed to build the game we’ve been preparing for our whole lives.”

“We are firm believers that the global gaming industry will once again be redefined as 5G will allow wireless gaming with low and consistent latency, benefitting gamers through improved discoverability, social enabling and variety of content,” says Maki.vc founding partner Ilkka Kivimäki. “The Nordics have showcased their strength in games already before, and we find Mainframe’s exceptional, pan-Nordic team being uniquely positioned to seize this new opportunity.”

Mainframe Industries founders include Börkur Eiríksson, Kjartan Pierre Emilsson, Thor Gunnarsson, Fridrik Haraldsson, Reynir Hardarson, Sulka Haro, Kristján Valur Jónsson, Jyrki Korpi-Anttila, Saku Lehtinen, Ansu Lönnberg, Eetu Martola, Vigfús Ómarsson and Jón Helgi Thórarinsson.
