'Borderlands 3' (ALL) Reveals Next Level Cap Increase, Mayhem Mode 2.0 Details

by Rainier on March 24, 2020 @ 1:20 p.m. PDT

Borderlands 3 is a story-driven, non-stop galactic thrill-ride, filled with colorful characters, epic enemies and boss fights, and literally billions of guns.

Blast through new worlds and enemies as one of four brand new Vault Hunters – the ultimate treasure-seeking badasses of the Borderlands, each with deep skill trees, abilities, and customization.

Play solo or join with friends to take on insane enemies, collect bazillions of guns and loads of loot, and save your home from the most ruthless cult leaders in the galaxy – the Calypso Twins.

Today’s episode of the Borderlands Show featured an exclusive Let’s Play of Borderlands 3’s next campaign add-on – Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock – as well as new details about the game’s next level cap increase, a new ECHOcast Extension event, the forthcoming Mayhem Mode 2.0 update, and more!

With Guns, Love, and Tentacles due out this Thursday, March 26, Gearbox gave hosts Greg Miller and Fran Mirabella extended hands-on time with the campaign add-on’s opening hour. The resulting Let’s Play shows off new narrative details, enemy types, unique loot, and more.

If you want to check out the add-on for yourself and don’t already own the Super Deluxe Edition, be sure to pick up the Borderlands 3Season Pass or buy the expansion a la carte when it launches.

This Thursday also brings two free content updates for all players: the next Borderlands 3 level cap increase and a new ECHOcast Twitch Extension event. Starting Thursday, the new maximum Vault Hunter level will be 57, up from 53. This will allow players to earn four additional skill points and equip two capstone abilities at once – a major bump in power for high-level players!

For streaming fans, the new Moxxtail ECHOcast Twitch extension event will provide viewers a new way to both engage with and support their favorite streamers. This new event uses Twitch’s premium currency “Twitch Bits” and allows viewers to collectively create cocktails that will buff streamers once they’re delivered in-game. Gearbox Software’s Head of DLC Production Anthony Nicholson also appeared on today’s episode to discuss two free content updates coming to Borderlands 3 in April: Mayhem Mode 2.0 and the Revenge of the Cartels seasonal event. Nicholson expanded on the Mayhem Mode 2.0 details shared last month at PAX East, revealing changes to the user interface, additional Mayhem modifiers, and a brand new, Mayhem-specific weapon drop system.

For Revenge of the Cartels, Nicholson shared the very first details: Maurice returns to task players with taking out cartel operatives throughout the Borderlands. Meet Maurice’s quota and he’ll send you to the Mansion – a brand new location where an intense boss battle awaits. With three different factions to fight, though, the combat you encounter in this area will change with each playthrough. The event will last six weeks but can be toggled off and on for the duration of the event, per fan feedback.

Gameplay highlights from the first hour of the spine-tingling new storyline came courtesy of Vault-hunting hosts Greg Miller and Fran Mirabella, who were joined once again by Borderlands Stream Team member MitsuShow. Gearbox’s Head of DLC Production Anthony Nicholson also returned to the show this week, sharing info about upcoming free additions to Borderlands 3 including Mayhem 2.0 and the Revenge of the Cartels seasonal event.

This episode debuted some big news: another free level cap increase will go live to coincide with the release of Guns, Love, and Tentacles patch, bringing the max level for your Vault Hunters up to 57. The extra skill points you’ll get from gaining these four additional levels will let you unlock two capstone skills, which should see a huge surge of power for endgame players and unlock all kinds of new build possibilities.

First up, Mayhem 2.0 turns Mayhem Mode into its own tab in your ECHO device, so you won’t have to visit the pedestal in Sanctuary III every time you want to adjust it. There are now 10 Mayhem levels to conquer, as well as over 25 Mayhem Modifiers that are classified by general difficulty for the ways they’ll make you adapt to new playstyles. Your chosen Mayhem level will also determine the kind of loot you get; for instance, a Mayhem 4 weapon will have better stats than the same weapon dropping at Mayhem 2, so the gear you earn in one Mayhem level will prepare you for the next.

Mayhem 2.0 is scheduled to launch alongside Revenge of the Cartels in April, a new six-week seasonal event affecting the entire galaxy of Borderlands 3. Your kindly Saurian pal Maurice has gotten himself in trouble with a shady character named Joey Ultraviolet, and now Joey’s coming to collect on some debts. You need to help Maurice wipe his slate clean by taking care of different thugs hiding out across the solar system including areas added in campaign add-ons; you’ll recognize them by their flashy neon attire. Once you’ve eliminated enough of these operatives, Maurice will use his handy portal device on Sanctuary III to whisk you away to The Mansion, a swanky new map where Joey Ultraviolet and his goons are hiding out.

Your encounters in The Mansion will change depending on which of three distinct gangs currently reigns over the Cartel. You won’t know what kind of enemies to expect until you’re in the thick of battle, beyond the fact that you’ll never fight the same faction twice in a row. Better yet, each gang has some unique loot drops and Anointed parts, so repeat runs are highly encouraged. An added suite of Cartel-themed Challenges will let you unlock Revenge of the Cartels gear, including some ‘80s-tastic Vault Hunter cosmetics. And of course, you’ll have the option to turn Revenge of the Cartels on or off as you choose for the duration of the event.

We’ll have even more details to share on both Mayhem 2.0 and Revenge of the Cartels closer to their big April debut, so stay tuned.
